Wheel Bearing: Removal

  1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove wheel. Remove collision guard from brake caliper. Remove brake tube (plug openings) from rear wheel brake caliper.
  2. Remove 2 bolts holding brake caliper to axle housing and remove brake caliper. Remove brake disc. Using brake spring pliers, unhook and remove parking brake springs.
  3. Using a .12" (3 mm) punch, drive out lock pin holding parking brake cable to lever. Disconnect parking brake cable from lever. Remove 4 bolts holding rear axle shaft bearing retainer and 2 brake shoe retaining springs to axle housing.
  4. Using a slide hammer puller and Axle Shaft Attachment (2709), pull axle shaft from axle housing. Using a slide hammer puller and Oil Seal Attachment (2337), pull oil seal from axle housing.
  5. Place axle shaft in Rear Axle Shaft Bearing Remover/Installer (2838). Position tool between bearing and seal. Press bearing and bearing retainer from axle shaft (discard bearing retainer). Clean parts with solvent and compressed air.
