Rear Axle Seal & Bearing: Installation
- Pack new bearing and new seal lip groove with high temperature wheel bearing grease. Place bearing retainer and oil seal on axle shaft. Press new bearing and new snap ring onto axle shaft. Always use a new snap ring. Narrow side of taper fits into axle housing.
- Clean axle housing and drive in new inner seal. Install axle shaft and tighten bearing retainer bolts. Install parking brake shoes and reconnect cables. Install rotors and tighten set screws.
- Check parking brake adjustment. Install brake caliper, pads, and collision guard, if used. Reconnect brake line and bracket to axle housing. Install wheels and tighten lug nuts.
- Using Press Tool (5212), lift up seal and retaining plate on drive shaft so that split press plate can be installed on bearing. Place press yoke on top of press plate. Ensure that press plate opening is at 90° angle to press yoke opening.
- Grease new bearing between inner and outer races until grease protrudes on other side. Grease new inner and outer seals. Fill space between seal lips with grease. Position retaining plate and seal correctly on axle shaft.
- Install greased bearing and lock ring. Place Bearing Ring (5242) under bearing and lock ring. Position axle shaft in press. Put 2 "V" blocks under bearing ring ensuring that blocks do not touch axle shaft.
- Use Bearing Installer (1801) to press on shaft. Using Drift (5243) and Handle (1801), install inner seal. Install and tighten axle shaft and retaining plate assembly with brake pad retaining springs.
- Install parking brake shoes, brake disc and caliper. Ensure that disc clears parking brake shoes. Adjust parking brake cable.
