Camshaft & Tappets: Inspection

  1. Inspect camshaft journal diameter, lobe lift and for signs of wear. Replace camshaft if not within specification. Measure tappet diameter. Replace if not within specification. See ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS tables at end of article. Inspect tappets for scoring or wear.
  2. Install camshaft and rear bearing cap in cylinder head. Tighten bearing cap bolts to specification. Measure camshaft end play between camshaft and thrust surface of bearing cap.
  3. Camshaft end play should be within specification. See ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS tables at end of article. If not within specification, replace rear bearing cap.
