Valve Clearance
- Valve clearance is adjusted with engine off and engine either warm or cold. Remove valve cover.
- Rotate crankshaft center bolt until camshaft is in position for firing No. 1 cylinder and valve are closed. Both lobes should point upward. Crankshaft pulley timing mark should be aligned with 0 (zero) timing mark on timing belt cover.
- Using feeler gauge, check valve clearance of No. 1 cylinder, measuring between camshaft lobe and adjusting shim. Clearance should be within specification. See VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS table. Intake and exhaust valves have same adjustment clearances.VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS

Install Valve Adjuster Press (5022) and depress tappet. Using Special Pliers (5026), remove adjusting shim. See Fig 1.
- Using a micrometer, measure thickness of adjusting shim. Determine proper thickness of new adjusting shim to obtain adjusting clearance. See VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS table. For example; measure existing clearance and subtract correct clearance. Difference should be added to thickness of old adjusting shim to determine thickness of new adjusting shim required.
- Adjusting shims are available in thicknesses ranging from .130" (3.30 mm) to .177" (4.50 mm) in increments of .002" (.05 mm). Use only NEW adjusting shims.
- Coat adjusting shims with oil and install with marks facing downward. Remove valve adjuster press. Rotate crankshaft to correct firing position and repeat procedure on remaining cylinders in the following sequence: No. 3, No. 4 and No. 2.
- When all 4 cylinders have been adjusted, rotate camshaft several revolutions and recheck valve clearance on all cylinders. Install valve cover and gasket.
