Oil Pump: Inspection

  1. Measure backlash (clearance excluding bearings) between pump gears. It should be .006-.014" (.15-.35 mm). Also measure end play of gears. Allowable end play is .0008-.0048" (.02-.12 mm).
  2. Side clearance excluding bearings is .0008-.0035" 02-.09 mm). Drive shaft bearing clearance is .0013-.0028" 032-.070 mm). Idling shaft bearing clearance is .0006-.0016" 014-.043 mm).
  3. Relief valve spring free length should be 1.543" (39.2 mm). When loaded to 10.1-11.9 lbs. (4.5-5.4 kg), spring length should be 1.033" (26.3 mm). When loaded to 13.6-17.2 lbs. (6.2-7.8 kg), spring length should be .827" (21.0 mm).
  4. If any parts show excessive wear or play, replace necessary components. Drive shaft and gear are matched set and must be replaced as an assembly.
