Gear Oil, Draining And Filling

Special tools and workshop equipment required 

NOTE:

The gear oil in the bevel box must only be drained for a repair. Changing the oil is not intended.

Refer to the appropriate Electronic Parts Information for the gear oil specification.

Requirements

-- Lift the vehicle, all four mounts from lifting platform at the same height.

-- Remove the noise insulation. Refer to OVERVIEW - NOISE INSULATION .

-- If equipped, remove the right drive axle heat shield from the bevel box -arrows-. Refer to DRIVE AXLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Place the Used Oil Collection and Extraction Unit:SMN372500  under the transmission.

WARNING:

Risk of injury due to hot gear oil.

  • Wear protective eyewear.
  • Wear acid-resistant safety gloves.

-- Remove the oil drain plug -2- and drain the gear oil.

-- Install the new oil drain plug.

-- Tighten the bolt to the tightening specification. Refer to Fig 7.

NOTE:

Use the Used Oil Collection And Extraction Unit:SMN372500  to catch escaping gear oil.

-- Remove the oil filler hole plug -1-.

-- Install Charging Device for AWD Clutch Coupling 2 - Adapter 2:VAS6291/2  -A- until it stops.

-- Lock the elbow -B- with the adapter -A-.

-- Fill the gear oil.

NOTE:

When the bevel box is filled correctly, oil escapes at adapter -A-.

If the oil still does not leak out, repeat the filling procedure.

-- After filling correctly, remove the Charging Device for AWD Clutch Coupling 2 - Adapter 2:VAS6291/2  .

-- Install the >>old<< oil filler plug and lightly tighten it.

-- Start the engine, engage a gear and let the transmission turn for approximately two minutes.

-- Switch off the engine and remove the oil filler hole plug.

-- Check the oil level and fill again with oil up to the lower edge of the filler hole.

-- Install a new oil filler plug.

-- Tighten the bolt to the tightening specification. Refer to Fig 7.

NOTE:

Carefully remove leaking oil from the bevel box.

-- Install the heat shield above the right drive axle, if equipped. Refer to DRIVE AXLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Install the noise insulation. Refer to OVERVIEW - NOISE INSULATION .

Tightening Specifications:
