Outer CV Joint, Removing And Installing

-- Remove the drive axle. Refer to Drive Axle, Removing and Installing  .

-- Clamp the drive axle -1- into a vise -A- with jaw protectors -B-.

-- Open the clamps -2- and -4- for the CV boot -3-.

-- Slide the CV boot -3- back on the drive axle -1-.

-- Remove the grease and clean the drive axle -1-.

-- Push the CV joint -1- off of the drive axle -2- using a drift -A-.

-- The drift -A- must be positioned exactly to the ball hub -3- of the CV joint -1-.

-- At the same time reposition the drift -A - at the ball hub -3-.

Installing

Install in the reverse order of removal while noting the following:

-- Clean the CV joint and the drive axle -1-.

-- Use the commercially available water pump pliers -A-.

-- Apply pliers shoes to the jaws of the water pump pliers -A- in order to avoid damage to the drive axle splines -1-.

-- Position the ends of the new circlip -2- at the ends of the old circlip -3-.

-- Position the washer fluid pump pliers -A- and the old circlip -3- from the groove from the drive axle -1-.

-- At the same time the new circlip -2- is pressed in the groove from the drive axle -1-.

-- Check the correct seating of the circlip -2-.

-- Slide on a clamp with a smaller diameter.

-- Slide the CV boot onto drive axle.

-- Slide on a clamp with a larger diameter.

-- CV joint onto the drive axle with a plastic hammer until the circlip engages.

-- Press half of the total quantity of grease from the repair kit into the back of the CV joint.

-- Press the remainder of the grease from the repair kit into the CV boot.

-- Slide the CV boot with the clamp onto the CV joint.

-- Refer to Axle Boot Clamp, Tensioning  .
