Wheel Bearing Housing, Removing And Installing: Removing
The Left Front ABS Wheel Speed Sensor -G47- and Right Front ABS Wheel Speed Sensor -G45- will be called front speed sensor in the information that follows.
The Left Front Level Control System Sensor -G78- and the Right Front Level Control System Sensor -G289- will be called front level control system sensor in the information that follows.
The following information describes the removing and installing on the left side of the vehicle as an example.
Vehicles with wheel bearing screw
-- Loosen the outer wheel bearing screw. Refer to Wheel Bearing Screw, Loosening and Tightening .
-- Refer to Wheel, Removing .
-- Remove the outer wheel bearing screw.
AWD vehicles
-- Loosen the drive axle threaded connection. Refer to DRIVE AXLE THREADED CONNECTION, LOOSENING AND TIGHTENING .
-- Refer to Wheel, Removing .
-- Remove the drive axle threaded connection.
-- Pry out the drive axle from the wheel bearing unit. Refer to DRIVE AXLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
Continuation for all vehicles
-- Remove the clamp -3- and disengage the brake hose -4-.
-- Remove the bolt -2- from the wheel bearing housing -7-.
-- Move the bracket -1- with the lines -8- to the side.
-- Disconnect the connector -5- from the front speed sensor -6-.
-- Remove the brake rotor. Refer to BRAKE ROTOR, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the control arm stone chip protection. Refer to Control Arm Stone Chip Protection, Removing and Installing .
-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and the cover plate -1-.
Vehicles with front level control system sensor
-- Remove the front level control system sensor from the control arm. Refer to Left and Right Front Level Control System Sensor G78/G289, Removing and Installing .
Continuation for all vehicles
-- Remove the right and left lower control arm -2- from the ball joint -1-.
-- Remove the nuts -3-.
-- Remove the control arm -2- from the ball joint in the -direction of the arrow A-.
-- Pull the wheel bearing housing -1- outward in the -direction of the arrow B-.
-- Turn away the wheel bearing housing -1- outward, to take the load of the control arm -2-.
-- Remove the left and right tie rod end -4- from the wheel bearing housing -1-.
-- Loosen the nut -2- on the tie rod end -4- but do not remove it. At the same time counterhold with a suitable tool on the pin.
-- Remove the nut -2- only to the end of the threads. To protect the thread, screw the nut -2- on the pin several turns.
Damage to the wheel bearing housing! Loosened bushings on the wheel bearing housing due to incorrectly inserted puller - ball joint.
- Position the ball joint puller in a way that the lower mount is supported on the socket and not on the wheel bearing housing.
-- Press off the tie rod end -4- from the wheel bearing housing -1- using the Puller - Ball Joint: 3287A -A-. Remove the nut -2-.
-- Remove the nut -3-.
-- Remove the bolt -5- from the wheel bearing housing -1-.
Risk of damaging the suspension strut by breaking the guide.
- Do not twist the suspension strut -3- when loosening.
- Do not turn the wheel bearing housing -1- against the guide -2-.
-- Insert the Spreader: VAS 751 003 -A- in the slit from the wheel bearing housing -1-.
-- Spread the wheel bearing housing -1- using the Spreader: VAS 751 003 -A-. At the same time using suitable tools on the hex fitting -B- turn the spindle and counterhold it on a flat surface -C-.
Risk of damaging the wheel housing by spreading apart too far.
- Do not spread the wheel housing farther than the specified dimension.
-- Spread the wheel bearing housing -1- using the Spreader: VAS 751 003 -A-.
Conditions
- The dimension -a- must be a maximum 7.8 mm.
- Turn only until the end stop of the Spreader Device: VAS 751 003 -A-.
