Ball Joint, Removing And Installing: Removing

AWD Vehicles: 

-- Loosen the drive axle threaded connection. Refer to DRIVE AXLE THREADED CONNECTION, LOOSENING AND TIGHTENING  .

Continuation for all vehicles 

-- Refer to Wheel, Removing .

-- Remove the control arm stone chip protection. Refer to Control Arm Stone Chip Protection, Removing and Installing  .

Vehicles with front level control system sensor 

-- Remove the left front level control system sensor from the control arm. Refer to Left and Right Front Level Control System Sensor G78/G289, Removing and Installing .

AWD Vehicles: 

-- Remove the drive axle threaded connection.

-- Pry out the drive axle from the wheel bearing unit. Refer to DRIVE AXLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING  .

Continuation for all vehicles 

-- Remove the nuts -3-.

-- Remove the control arm -2- downward from the ball joint in the -direction of the arrow A-.

-- Pull the wheel bearing housing -1- outward in the -direction of the arrow B-.

-- Turn away the wheel bearing housing -1- outward, to take the load of the control arm -2-.

-- Push the control arm upward as far as necessary.

-- Loosen the nut -4- on the ball joint -2- but do not remove it.

-- Remove the nut -4- only to the end of the threads. To protect the thread, screw the nut -4- on the pin several turns.

-- At the same time counterhold with a commercially available Torx Bit T40.

CAUTION:

Damage to the wheel bearing housing! Loosened bushings on the wheel bearing housing due to incorrectly inserted ball joint puller.

- Position the ball joint puller in a way that the lower mount is supported on the socket and not on the wheel bearing housing.

-- Position the lower mount from the Puller - Ball Joint: 3287A  -A- on the bushing -3-.

-- Press off the ball joint -2- from the wheel bearing housing -1- using the Puller - Ball Joint: 3287A  -A-. Remove the nut -4-.
