Cylinder Head, Removing And Installing: Installing

Install in the reverse order of removal while noting the following:

CAUTION:

Risk of damage due to sanding residue in the engine.

Damage to the turbocharger or the connecting rod bearing may be the result.

- Do not use unapproved sanding materials like sandpaper, sand stone sanding pads, sanding strips, or abrasive cloths.

- Make sure the neighboring work stations are clean and that no unapproved sanding materials are used.

-- Remove the sealant residue at the sealant surfaces using a brush from the Brush Cleaning Set:VAS 294 019 .

Requirement

Sealing surface may not be raised.
The dark discoloration does not need to be removed.

-- Make sure that no sealant residue enter open ducts of the engine.

-- Remove any loose sealant residue with a lint-free cleaning cloth.

-- Insert the alignment pins -arrows-.

-- Apply the new cylinder head gasket -2-, at the same time pay attention to the installation position.

Requirement

The part number must be visible from the intake side.

-- Set piston of cylinder 1 to TDC and turn crankshaft back slightly.

-- Clean oil and coolant residue out of the blind holes for the cylinder head bolts in the cylinder block

Requirement

The help of a second technician is necessary for the following procedure.

-- Position the cylinder head.

-- Insert the cylinder head bolts and screw in by hand.

-- Tighten the cylinder head bolt.

-- Change the engine oil. Refer to Engine Oil, Draining; Replacing and Filling Engine Oil.

If the Cylinder Head was Replaced, then Adaptations must be Made:

-- Perform the "Adaptations after component replacement" using the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester . Refer to the appropriate Service Information .
