Timing Chain, Checking

-- Remove the noise insulation. Refer to OVERVIEW - NOISE INSULATION .

-- Remove the engine support. Refer to Crankshaft, Removing and Installing .

-- Remove the plug -arrow-.

CAUTION:

Risk of damaging the engine by the timing mechanism skipping.

- Only let the engine turn in the direction of engine rotation.

-- Turn the vibration damper until the chain tensioner piston is extended the maximum distance in the direction of -arrow-.

-- Determine the visible piston teeth.

Tip

The visible teeth are all of the teeth that are located to the right of the chain tensioner housing -arrow-.

If Six or Fewer Splines are Visible

-- Erase the DTC memory entry "Chain length, adaptation" using the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester .

Requirement

The camshaft timing chain must not be replaced.

If 7 or More Splines are Visible

-- Replace the camshaft timing chain. Refer to Camshaft Timing Chain, Removing and Installing .
