Camshaft Timing Chain, Removing And Installing: Removing

-- Remove the bearing bracket. Refer to Bearing Bracket, Removing and Installing .

CAUTION:

Risk of damaging the engine by the timing mechanism skipping.

- Only let the engine turn in the direction of engine rotation.

-- Turn the crankshaft using the Wrench - 21mm:T40263 , -A-, Adapter:T40314 -B- and the 24 mm socket -C- until the vibration damper -1- is at the "TDC".

Requirement

The marking -2- at the vibration damper -1- must align with the marking -3-.

-- "TDC" - Check the camshaft chain sprockets position.

Requirement

The markings -3- from the camshaft chain sprockets -2 and 4- must point upward.
The marking -arrow- and the marking -5- must face each other.

-- Remove the lower timing chain cover. Refer to Lower Timing Chain Cover, Replacing .

-- Disengage the tension spring -3- from the oil pan upper section -arrow-.

-- Remove the guide pin -2- and the chain tensioner -4-.

-- Remove the oil pump- drive chain -1- and let it hang over the Assembly Tool:T10531/6 -A-.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows-.

-- Secure the Chain Tensioner Lever:T40243 -A- with bolts -B- at the cylinder head.

Requirement

The help of a second technician is necessary for the following procedure.

-- Press the chain tensioner -2- circlip -3- together and hold it.

-- Press the lever -A- in direction of -arrow- and hold, to push back the chain tensioner.

Tip

The chain tensioner is lubricated with oil and can only be pushed back slowly by applying constant pressure.

-- Lock the chain tensioner -1- using the Locking Tool:T40435 -A-.

-- Remove the Chain Tensioner Lever:T40243 .

-- Secure the locks -4- at the cylinder head.

-- Push the lock -4- in direction of -arrow C- into the splines of the camshaft chain sprocket -2-.

-- For this move the intake camshaft -2- back and forth using the Assembly Tool:T40427 -1- in direction of -arrow A- and direction of -arrow B-.

-- Secure the lock -6- to the cylinder head.

Requirement

The help of a second technician is necessary for the following procedure.

-- Hold the exhaust camshaft -1- using the Assembly Tool:T40427 -3-.

-- Remove the guide pin -7- and remove the tensioning rail -8- downward.

-- Push the lock -6- in direction of -arrow B- into the splines of the camshaft chain sprocket -1-.

-- For this move the exhaust camshaft -1- using the assembly tool -3- in direction of -arrow A-.

-- Release the retainer -arrow- using a commercially available screwdriver and remove the guide rail -1- toward the front.

-- Remove the guide pin -1- and remove the guide rail -2-.

CAUTION:

Risk of destroying the engine by adjusting the valve timing.

- Do not turn the crankshaft out of TDC.

-- Remove the camshaft timing chain from the camshaft chain sprockets and guide downward.

-- Guide out the camshaft timing chain in between the tensioning pin and the oil pump drive chain.
