Sealing Flange, Removing And Installing, Transmission Side: Installing
Install in the reverse order of removal while noting the following:
Risk of injuring the eyes from sealant residue.
- Wear protective eyewear.
Risk of injury due to chemical cleaning solutions. Chemical cleaning solutions can be easily inflammable and cause eye and skin irritation.
- Wear protective eyewear, safety gloves and a respirator.
- Pay attention to the safety data sheet and the operating instructions of the chemical.
-- Remove the sealant residue at the sealant surfaces using a brush from the Brush Cleaning Set:VAS 294 019 and commercially available chemical sealant remover.
Requirement
- The sealing surfaces must be free of sealant residue and lubricant.
Leakage due to wrong installation position of the sealing lip.
- Pay attention to the installation position.
-- Make sure that the sealing lip points in direction of -arrow- to the engine.
Requirement
- The sealing flange sealing lip must not be kinked or damaged.
-- Check the Crank Shaft Seal Installer - Guide Piece:T10122/6A -B-.
Requirement
- The guide piece -B- must not have sharp edges or be dirty.
-- Attach the Guide Piece to Crankshaft Seal Install Kit - Guide Piece:T10122/1 -A- on the guide piece -B-.
-- Push the sealing flange -C-, starting with the outer side, over the guide piece -A- onto the guide piece -B-.
-- Remove the guide piece -A-.
For clarity the guide piece is not shown.
Risk of engine damage due to excess sealant in the lubrication system.
- Do not apply sealant bead thicker than indicated.
-- Apply a sealant bead -arrow-.
Requirement
- The sealant bead thickness -arrow- must be 2 to 3 mm.
- The sealing flange must be installed within 5 minutes of applying the sealant.
-- Insert the guide piece -A- with the sealing flange -B- on the crankshaft journal.
-- Bring the sealing flange -B- carefully over the guide piece -A- into the installation position. Pay attention to the left and right side of the centering collar.
-- Remove the guide piece -A-.
-- Make sure that the sealing lip is not upside down or damaged.
-- Tighten the sealing flange -B-.
Requirement
- The sealant must cure for 30 minutes before engine oil can be filled.
-- Refer to ENGINE OIL LEVEL, CHECKING .
-- Install the flywheel. Refer to Flywheel, Removing and Installing .
-- Install the transmission. Refer to TRANSMISSION, INSTALLING .
