Drive Axle, Removing And Installing: Removing
The following information describes the removing and installing on the left side of the vehicle as an example.
The Left Rear ABS Wheel Speed Sensor -G46- and Right Rear ABS Wheel Speed Sensor -G44- will be called rear speed sensor in the information that follows.
-- Loosen the outer drive axle threaded connection. Refer to DRIVE AXLE THREADED CONNECTION, LOOSENING AND TIGHTENING .
-- Loosen the wheel bolts.
-- Raise the vehicle.
-- Remove the wheel.
Vehicles with Level Control System Sensor
-- Remove the bolts -1-.
-- Remove the Left Rear Level Control System Sensor -- -2- bracket.
Vehicles with Adaptive Ride Control
-- Disconnect the connector -1- from the shock absorber -2-.
-- Remove the wire -3- from the shock absorber -2- -arrow-.
If there is moisture in the connector area, blow compressed air on the contacts on the shock absorber and the connectors.
Vehicles with Trim Panel at the Transverse Link
-- Remove the expanding rivets -1-.
-- Remove the bolts -2- for the trim panel -3-.
Continuation for all vehicles
-- Insert the Spring Compressor -3-.
- Spring Compressor Kit - Spring Retainer with Inserts:V.A.G 1752/3A
- Spring Compressor Kit - Adapter Blocks:V.A.G 1752/9
- Spring Compressor Kit - Spring Tensioner:V.A.G 1752/1
- Spring
Incorrectly pretensioning the spring increases the risk of injury.
Components are under tension and loosening the threaded connection can lead to injury.
- Make sure the spring is positioned correctly in the spring compressor.
- Pretension the spring, until the strut mount is released.
Use a wrench or a reversible ratchet to tighten the spring compressor.
The Spring Compressor remains with the spring in the vehicle.
-- Tension the spring.
-- Remove the nut -1- from the coupling rod -2-.
-- Remove the coupling rod -2- from the stabilizer bar -3-.
-- Remove the bolts -arrows- for the stabilizer bar -1-
-- Remove the stabilizer bar -1- from the subframe -2- and pivot downward.
-- Remove the clamps -1- on both sides of the vehicle.
-- Free up the brake lines from the bracket.
Do not disconnect the brake line.
Only Right Drive Axle.
-- Remove the right rear muffler.
Vehicles with Bolted Joints on the Inner Side
-- Remove the bolts for the drive axle -arrows- on the rear final drive.
Vehicles with Inserted Joints on the Inner Side
-- Press the drive axle -1- out of the final drive -2- using an extractor lever -arrow-.
Continuation for Both Sides
-- Secure the drive axle -1- on the control arm -2- using the S-Hooks: VAS 281 007 -A-.
-- Disconnect the connector from the rear speed sensor and the electro-mechanical parking brake parking brake motor.
-- If equipped, disengage the line from the bracket on the transverse link.
-- Unscrew the nut -1- and remove the washer -2-.
-- Remove the bolt -4-.
-- Remove the washer -3-.
-- Tilt the wheel bearing housing outward and remove the drive axle from the transmission flange.
-- Pivot the drive axle downward and remove it from the wheel bearing.
If the drive axle cannot be pulled out of the wheel bearing, then the drive axle can be pushed out of the wheel bearing using the Drive Shaft Remover:T10520A .
Before using the Drive Shaft Remover:T10520A , make sure that the thrust piece -1- is installed.
Using the Drive Shaft Remover: T10520A :
-- Attach the Drive Shaft Remover:T10520A -1- to the wheel hub using three wheel bolts -2-. Press out the drive axle -3-.
-- Follow the specified sequence exactly.
I - Tighten the knurled nut -1- hand-tight.
II - Only turn the bolt -2- using a wrench. Remove the drive axle using the Drive Shaft Remover:T10520A .
At the end of the tasks or to set back, the spindles must be brought back into the original position so that the hydraulic operation can be used.
-- Remove the drive axle.
