Gear Oil, Draining And Filling, Bevel Box "0FN"

NOTE:

The gear oil in the bevel box must only be drained for a repair. Changing the oil is not intended.

Refer to the appropriate Electronic Parts Information for the gear oil specification.

Special tools and workshop equipment required

Used Oil Collection and Extraction Unit:SMN372500

Requirements

The vehicle must be level.

-- Lift the vehicle, all four mounts from lifting platform at the same height.

-- Remove the noise insulation. Refer to OVERVIEW - NOISE INSULATION .

-- If equipped, remove the right drive axle heat shield from the bevel box -arrows-. Refer to DRIVE AXLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Place the Used Oil Collection and Extraction Unit:SMN372500 under the transmission.

CAUTION:

Risk of injury due to hot gear oil.

Wear protective eyewear.
Wear acid-resistant safety gloves.

-- Remove the oil drain plug -2- and drain the gear oil.

-- Install the new oil drain plug.

NOTE:

Use the Used Oil Collection And Extraction Unit:SMN372500 to catch escaping gear oil.

-- Remove the oil filler hole plug -1-.

-- Install the Charging Device for BorgWarner Coupling 2 - Adapter 3 :VAS 6291/3 all the way.

-- Engage the elbow on the Charging Device for AWD Clutch Coupling 2:VAS 6291A with the Charging Device For AWD Clutch Coupling 2 - Adapter 3 :VAS 6291/3

The hose must not sag.

-- Fill the gear oil.

NOTE:

When the bevel box is filled correctly, fluid comes out at the Charging Device for BorgWarner Coupling 2 - Adapter 3 :VAS 6291/3 .

If the oil still does not leak out, repeat the filling procedure.

-- If the gear oil leaks out at the Charging Device For BorgWarner Coupling 2 - Adapter 3:VAS 6291/3 , hold the oil container in such a way so that any excess oil flows back into the container.

-- When the fluid stops flowing back, remove the Charging Device for AWD Clutch Coupling 2:VAS 6291A .

-- Remove the Charging Device For AWD Clutch Coupling 2 - Adapter 3:VAS 6291/3 .

CAUTION:

The correct oil level is under the oil filler hole and cannot be checked.

If after filling with the filling procedure the higher oil level is not corrected, this can cause oil to leak from the bleeder while driving.

The correct oil level can only be reached after the filling procedure only by extracting 100 ml gear oil.

-- Extract 100 ml gear oil using a commercially available sprayer with a hose maximum 6 mm diameter from the bevel box

-- Install a new oil filler plug.

NOTE:

Carefully remove leaking oil from the bevel box.

-- Install the heat shield above the right drive axle, if equipped. Refer to DRIVE AXLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Install the noise insulation. Refer to OVERVIEW - NOISE INSULATION .
