Refrigerant R744 Environmental Information

- Refrigerant R744 is a natural refrigerant (carbon dioxide, CO2 ) and has a considerably smaller impact on the environment when compared with other refrigerants (gases). This natural refrigerant does not contain any harmful substances and can therefore be released into the atmosphere.
- The carbon dioxide used as refrigerant R744 is mostly obtained from natural sources, or during gas purification from various chemical processes or oil and natural gas processing.
- After 01/01/2011, only vehicles that are filled with a refrigerant having a GWP less than 150 will receive a new type approval. Refrigerant R744 has a GWP of approximately 1 and is therefore below the specified value of 150.
- The A/C systems in newly manufactured vehicles from 2014 have been gradually converted from refrigerant R134a to refrigerant R1234yf. This refrigerant has a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of approximately 4. The GWP of refrigerant R744 (carbon dioxide) is 1 and, as a result, has considerably less influence on the Earth's atmosphere than refrigerant R134a with approximately 1400 and even smaller influence than refrigerant R1234yf with approximately 4.

- The Global Warming Potential (GWP) of refrigerant R744 is "1". The effect on global warming is "1400" times less than that of refrigerant R134a, four times less than refrigerant R1234yf, and "23" times less than that of methane or butane.
