Overview - Pistons And Connecting Rod

- Piston Rings
- Offset gaps by 120°
- Use piston ring pliers for removing and installing
- "TOP" identification faces toward piston crown
- Checking the piston ring gap. Refer to PISTON AND CYLINDER BORE, CHECKING .
- Checking the groove clearance. Refer to PISTON AND CYLINDER BORE, CHECKING .
- Piston
- Check using the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester Refer to PISTON AND CYLINDER BORE, CHECKING .
- Mark the installed location to connecting rod and the cylinder to which it belongs
- The two deep valve recesses in piston head point toward center of cylinder block.
- Pistons, Removing and Installing. Refer to PISTONS, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
- Circlip
- Check for secure fit
- Connecting Rod
- Always replace as a set
- Mark which cylinder to which it belongs -B-.
- Installed position: the markings -A- must align
- Bearing Shell
- Note the installation position
- Do not interchange used bearing shells.
- Bearing shell retaining tabs must be firmly seated in the recesses.
- Axial clearance:
New: 0.05 to 0.31 mm
Wear limit: 0.40 mm.
- Measure radial clearance with Plastigage:
New: 0.02 to 0.07 mm.
Wear limit: 0.10 mm
- Do not turn crankshaft during the radial clearance measurement
- Connecting Rod Bearing Cap
- Mark which cylinder to which it belongs -B-.
- Installed position: the markings -A- must align
- 40 Nm + 1

additional turn (90°)
- Replace
- Lubricate the threads and contact surface.
- Tighten to 40 Nm to measure radial play. Do not turn further.
- Piston Pin
- If difficult to move, heat piston to 60 °C (140 °F)
- Remove and install using the Pilot Drift:VW 222 A
