Cooling System, Flushing With Distilled Water
-- Remove the bleeder hose -2- from the coolant expansion tank -1-.
-- Connect the bleeder hose -2- from the coolant expansion tank with the flushing hose -1-.
-- Seal the connection on the coolant expansion tank using the plugs -3-. Secure the plug with a hose clamp.
-- Close the shut-off valve -B-.
-- Remove the engine cover.
Vehicles With Camshaft Adjustment:
-- Remove the air filter housing. Refer to AIR FILTER HOUSING, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
Continuation For All Vehicles:
The cooling system is divided into the following coolant circuits:
- Cylinder block and cylinder head
- Heater Core for the Heater
- Radiator
- Charge air cooler and charge air cooling circuit cooler
The goal in the following procedure is to flush the four coolant circuits by clamping the bleeder hoses while alternating from side to side.
This procedure must be done twice with distilled water. Then it is flushed twice with coolant.
The liter specifications are averages and may differ depending on the vehicle equipment. The quantity can be read using the scale on the container.
Important for the flushing quantity is the change in color at connection 1 in the sight window. Likeness in color between connection 1 and 2 in the sight window is only achieved during the second flushing procedure.
If a change in color is visible in the viewing glass, the next coolant circuit is flushed.
1. Cylinder Block And Cylinder Head, Flushing With Distilled Water
A check valve -1- is installed in the bleeder hose from the charge air cooler. Therefore the hose must be clamped at the locations indicated.
-- Use hose clamps to clamp off the bleeder hoses at the locations indicated.
-- Open the shut-off valve -A- on the valve block. Distilled water is now pumped through the engine.
-- Monitor the sight window: if the coolant begins to discolor, close the shut-off valve -A-.
- Required amount of distilled water: approximately 2 to 3 liters (2.11 to 3.17 quarts)
2. Flushing The Heater Core For The Heater With Distilled Water:
-- Use hose clamps to clamp off the bleeder hoses at the locations indicated.
-- Open the shut-off valve -A- on the valve block. Distilled water is now pumped through the engine.
-- Monitor the sight window: if the coolant begins to discolor, close the shut-off valve -A-.
- Required amount of distilled water: approximately 2 liters (2.11 quarts)
3. Radiator, Flushing With Distilled Water
-- Use hose clamps to clamp off the bleeder hoses at the locations indicated.
-- Open the shut-off valve -A- on the valve block. Distilled water is now pumped through the engine.
-- Monitor the sight window: if the coolant begins to discolor, close the shut-off valve -A-.
- Required amount of distilled water: approximately 2 liters (2.11 quarts)
4. Charge Air Cooler And Charge Air Cooling Circuit Cooler, Flushing With Distilled Water
-- Use hose clamps to clamp off the bleeder hoses at the locations indicated.
-- Open the shut-off valve -A- on the valve block. Distilled water is now pumped through the engine.
-- Monitor the sight window: if the coolant begins to discolor, close the shut-off valve -A-.
- Required amount of distilled water: approximately 2 liters (2.11 quarts)
Repeat the flushing procedures 1 through 4, but only pump through approximately one liter (1.05 quart) of distilled water each time. Refer to COOLING SYSTEM, FLUSHING .
