Front Axle Differential Lock Fluid, Draining And Filling

Special tools and workshop equipment required

Torque Wrench, 6-50Nm: VAG1331A
Used Oil Collection and Extraction Unit: SMN372500
Flexible Funnel: VAS6675
Commercially available hose approximately (1.50 m long) outer circumference approximately 15 mm
Commercially Available Funnel

Draining Oil

Observe the safety information.
Use a : VAS6519 to measure the oil temperature.
The vehicle must be level.
Front axle differential lock in installation position.

CAUTION:

There is a risk of injury.

Wear acid-resistant safety gloves.

-- If equipped, remove the noise insulation. Refer to OVERVIEW - NOISE INSULATION .

-- Place the : SMN372500 under the final drive.

-- Use the : VAS6675 to drain the oil.

-- Position the : VAS6675 so that the subframe does not come in contact with the oil.

-- Remove the oil drain plug -arrow- from the front axle differential lock.

-- Drain the oil completely.

The illustration shows an example for use.

NOTE:

If the oil can no longer be filled, please pay attention to the disposal regulations.

-- Install the new oil drain plug -arrow- (see previous illustration) and tighten to the tightening specification.

-- Install the noise insulation. Refer to OVERVIEW - NOISE INSULATION .

Tightening Specification

Oil drain plug. Refer to OVERVIEW - FRONT AXLE DIFFERENTIAL LOCK COMPONENTS .

Oil, Filling

-- Replace oil filler plug after removing.

The vehicle must be level.

-- Place the : SMN372500 under the front axle differential lock.

-- Use a Commercially Available Hose approximately (1.50 m long) with Outer Circumference approximately 15 mm and a Commercially Available Funnel to fill:

-- Route the Hose -A- through the engine compartment.

-- Clean the area near the front axle differential lock oil filler plug -arrow-.

-- Cover neighboring components.

-- Remove the oil filler plug -arrow-.

-- Insert Hose -A- in the filler hole -arrow-.

The hose must not sag.

-- Insert the funnel in Hose -A-.

-- Fill with oil until some starts to escape from between the hose and the oil fill hole.

-- Remove Hose. Some extra oil may drain out.

The oil level is correct when it fills up to the lower edge of the oil fill hole.

-- Install a new oil filler plug -arrow- and tighten it to the tightening specification.

-- If necessary, clean the area near the front axle differential lock oil filler plug -arrow- and neighboring components.

Tightening Specification

Oil filler plug. Refer to OVERVIEW - FRONT AXLE DIFFERENTIAL LOCK COMPONENTS .
