Procedure
-- Set the piston on cylinder 1 to TDC. Refer to VALVE TIMING, CHECKING .
-- Remove the plug and loosen the intake side camshaft adjuster bolt slightly one turn. Refer to INTAKE CAMSHAFT ADJUSTER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING, VEHICLES WITH ADJUSTABLE EXHAUST CAMSHAFT .
-- Loosen the exhaust side toothed belt sprocket approximately one turn. Refer to EXHAUST CAMSHAFT ADJUSTER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Loosen the tensioning roller bolt -1- using the : T10500 .
-- Using the : T10499A , release the tension on the tensioning roller at the eccentric -2-.
-- Before removing the toothed belt, mark the running direction with chalk or a felt-tip pen for installation later.
Toothed Belt Bending Radius
There is a risk of destroying a used toothed belt if the running direction is reversed.
The toothed belt is made out of a fiberglass cord webbing.
The bending radius -r- on the toothed belt -2- must not exceed 25 mm.
Otherwise the service life of the toothed belt would be impaired.
-- Remove the toothed belt from the camshaft sprockets.
Risk of destroying the engine by adjusting the valve timing.
Do not turn the crankshaft out of TDC.
Installing
-- Replace the bolts that were tightened with an additional turn.
-- Replace the O-ring for the plug if it is damaged.
The rest of the assembly is performed in reverse order of removal, noting the following:
-- Install the toothed belt and adjust valve timing. Refer to VALVE TIMING, ADJUSTING .
