Engine, Installing: Notes

Install in the reverse order of removal. Note the following:

CAUTION: When doing any repair work, especially in the engine compartment, pay attention to the following due to clearance issues:

Route lines of all types (for example, fuel, hydraulic, Evaporative Emission (EVAP), coolant, refrigerant, brake fluid and vacuum) and electrical wiring so that the original path is followed.
To prevent damage to the lines, make sure there is sufficient clearance to all moving or hot components.

-- Insert new centering sleeves for centering the transmission to the cylinder block.

-- Engage the intermediate plate at the sealing flange and slide it onto centering sleeves -arrows-.

with a Manual Transmission

-- Working on the clutch, refer to [For transmission(s) 0A4] Clutch [For transmission(s) 02Q] Clutch [For transmission(s) 02E] Clutch .

with a Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG®)

-- Working on the clutch, refer to [For transmission(s) 0A4] Clutch [For transmission(s) 02Q] Clutch [For transmission(s) 02E] Clutch .

-- Replace the needle bearings in the crankshaft. Refer to CRANKSHAFT NEEDLE BEARING .

-- Pay attention to the selector lever cable.

Continuation for All

-- When installing the engine and transmission assembly, check for clearance to the subframe as well as to the radiator.

-- Adjust the engine and/or transmission mounts. Refer to ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION MOUNT, ADJUSTING .

NOTE: Engine and transmission mount tightening specifications. Refer to ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION MOUNT OVERVIEW .

with a Manual Transmission

-- Install the shift mechanism to the transmission. Refer to [For transmission(s) 0A4] Removal and Installation [For transmission(s) 02Q] Removal and Installation [For transmission(s) 02E] Removal and Installation .

with a DSG®

-- Install the selector lever cable to the transmission. Refer to Removal And Installation .

Continuation for All

Electrical connections and routing, refer to 97 WIRING .

-- Observe the safety precautions after connecting the battery. Refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .

-- Reset the lock carrier service position. Refer to DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION .

-- Fill the coolant. Refer to COOLANT, DRAINING AND FILLING .

-- Check the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memories of all control modules and erase any faults that may have been stored. Refer to "OBD" in the vehicle diagnostic tester.

-- Perform a road test.

NOTE: Follow all safety precautions during the road test. Refer to TEST AND MEASURING INSTRUMENTS DURING A TEST DRIVE .

-- Perform a vehicle system test and correct any faults.

NOTE: If the DTC memory was erased, the readiness code must be generated again. Refer to "Guided Fault Finding" in the vehicle diagnostic tester.
