Valve Guides, Checking: Procedure

NOTE: If valve is replaced during repair, use new valve for measurement.

Due to different stem diameters, only use an intake valve in the intake valve guide and an exhaust valve in the exhaust valve guide.

-- Secure the Dial Gauge - 0-10 mm VAS 6079 with the Dial Gauge Holder VW 387 on the cylinder head.

-- Place valve in valve guide.

The end of the valve stem must be flush with the guide.

-- Determine tip clearance.

Wear limit: 1.0 mm (0.039 inch).

-- If wear limit is exceeded, measure using new valves.

-- Replace the cylinder head if the wear limit is still exceeded.

NOTE: The valve guides cannot be replaced.
