Selector Shaft Seal, Replacing

Special tools and workshop equipment required 

• Press Piece - Shift Rod/Alternator VW 423
• Puller - Crankshaft/Power Steering Seal T20143
• Torque Wrench 5-50 Nm V.A.G 1331

-- Remove the selector lever cable from the transmission. Refer to SELECTOR MECHANISM .

-- Disconnect the gearshift lever -A- and carefully remove it from the selector shaft -arrow-.

-- Remove the sealing ring in the -direction of the arrow-.

-- Lightly oil new seal on outer circumference.

-- Fill the area between the sealing lip and dust lip -Arrow- halfway with Sealing Grease G 052 128 A1.

• The closed side of the seal -arrow- faces the Press Piece - Shift Rod/Alternator VW 423.

-- Install the new seal all the way. Do not tilt the seal when doing this.

-- Attach the selector lever -A- and tighten the nut -arrow-.

• The transmission selector lever only fits to the splines in one position.

-- Attach the selector lever cable to the transmission. Refer to SELECTOR LEVER CABLE, CHECKING AND ADJUSTING .

Tightening Specifications: 

• Transmission selector lever to selector shaft. Refer to TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY OVERVIEW .
