Camshaft Timing Chain: Installing

Install in the reverse order of removal. Note the following:

NOTE:

The help of a second mechanic is needed to install the timing chain.

The painted links of the timing chain must be positioned on the markings on the chain sprockets.

-- Position the timing chain onto the intake camshaft.

-- Position the timing chain onto the exhaust camshaft.

-- Position the timing chain onto the crankshaft and hold it there.

-- Install the camshaft timing chain guide rail and tighten the bolts -A-.

NOTE: Use the help of a second mechanic to hold the exhaust camshaft in place.

-- Slowly turn the exhaust camshaft in the direction of the arrow -1- until the Camshaft Lock T40271/1 can be pulled from the chain sprocket splines.

-- Carefully release the camshaft until the camshaft timing chain rests on the upper glide track. Hold the camshaft in this position.

CAUTION: Before installing the tensioning rail, always check whether the painted chain link still aligns with the markings on the camshaft!

-- Continue to hold the camshaft and install the tensioning rail for the camshaft timing chain. Tighten the bolt -A-.

-- Remove the Camshaft Lock T40271/1.

-- Slide -2- the Camshaft Lock T40271/2 out of the chain sprocket splines. If necessary, slightly turn the intake camshaft with the wrench -1-.

-- Remove the Camshaft Lock T40271/2.

-- Remove the Locking Pin T40011 or the Tensioner Locking Tool T40267, depending on the version.

-- Check that the position of the colored chain link is aligned to the markings.

-- Install the drive chain for the oil pump and the chain tensioner. Tighten the bolt -1- and remove the Locking Pin T40011.

-- Install the bolts -arrows- and tighten them.

-- Carefully attach the bearing bracket. Do not tilt it when doing this. Hand-tighten the bolts -arrows-.

-- Tighten the bearing bracket bolts -arrows-. Refer to CAMSHAFT TIMING CHAIN OVERVIEW .

-- Install the control valve -item 6-.

NOTE: Due to the ratio, the painted chain links no longer align after turning the engine. For this reason, the valve timings must be checked again with the gauge.

-- Turn the engine two times in direction of engine rotation and check the valve timing. Refer to VALVE TIMING, CHECKING .
