Pistons And Connecting Rods Overview

  1. Piston Rings
    • Offset gaps by 120°
    • Use piston ring pliers for removing and installing
    • "TOP" faces toward piston crown
    • Checking the ring gap Figure.
    • Checking the piston ring groove clearance Figure.
    • Upper and center: compression ring
    • Lower: Oil scraping ring
  2. Piston
    • With the combustion chamber
    • Mark installed position and cylinder allocation
    • Installed position and allocation, piston/cylinder Figure
    • Arrow on piston face points toward belt pulley side
    • Install with piston ring compressor
    • Replace if piston skirt is cracked
    • Check the piston projection in TDC, refer to PISTON PROJECTION, MEASURING AT TDC 
  3. Piston Pin
    • If difficult to move, heat piston to 60°C
    • Remove and install with the Pilot Drift VW 222
  4. Locking Ring
  5. Connecting Rod
    • Mark the allocation to the cylinder using a color marker -A-
    • Installed position: the markings -B- face the belt pulley side
    • With cracked bearing cap
    • New connecting rod, separating NEW CONNECTING ROD, SEPARATING .
  6. Bearing Shell
    • Installation position. Refer to BEARING SHELLS INSTALLED POSITION .
    • Pay attention to the version: upper bearing shell (facing the piston) is made from wear resistant material; how to recognize it: a black line on the running surface near the separating point
    • Do not interchange used bearing shells.
    • Insert bearing shells in center
    • Make sure it is secure
    • Axial play wear limit: 0.37 mm
    • Measure the radial play with Plastigage®: wear limit: 0.08 mm
    • Do not turn crankshaft when checking radial clearance
  7. Cylinder Block
  8. Connecting Rod Bearing Cap
    • Pay attention to the installed position.
    • Due to the separation procedure (cracking) of the connecting rod, the cap only fits in one position and only to the corresponding connecting rod.
  9. Oil Spray Jet
    • For piston cooling
  10. Bolt
    • Install without sealant
    • 25 Nm
  11. Connecting Rod Bolt
    • Lubricate the thread and contact surface.
    • Use old bolt to measure radial play
    • Replace after removing
    • 30 Nm +90°
