Coolant, Draining And Filling: Filling

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2015 Volkswagen Beetle, 2014 Volkswagen Beetle, and 2013 Volkswagen Beetle. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

NOTE: The water portion of the coolant influences the effectiveness of the coolant. Volkswagen has decided to define the water quality used in the cooling system based on the different mixtures and country and regional requirements. Use distilled water. For this reason, we recommend using distilled water for older models when adding coolant or filling coolant for the first time. On newer models (from MY 2010), distilled water is required.
CAUTION: Only mix distilled water with coolant additives. Using distilled water provides optimum corrosion protection.
NOTE:

Only use the coolant additives approved by TL VW 774 G.

Use distilled water only.

The coolant additive prevents freezing and corrosion damage and scaling and it increases the boiling point. For this reason the system must be filled all year round with frost and corrosion protection additives.

Because of its high boiling point, the coolant contributes to engine reliability under heavy loads, particularly in countries with tropical climates.

Protection against frost must be assured to about -25°C (-13°F) (in arctic climatic countries to about -35°C (-31°F)).

The coolant concentration must not be reduced by adding water even in warmer seasons and in warmer countries. The coolant additive portion must be at least 40%.

If for climatic reasons a greater frost protection is required, the amount of coolant additives can be increased, but only up to 60% (frost protection to about -40°C (-40°F)), as otherwise frost protection is reduced again and cooling effectiveness is also reduced.

Do not use the old coolant again if replacing the radiator, heater core, cylinder head or cylinder head gasket.

-- Connect the coolant hoses to the engine oil cooler and the Engine Coolant Circulation Pump 2 -V178-.

-- Install the noise insulation. Refer to Description and Operation .

With cooling system charge unit VAS 6096

-- Install the adapter for the reservoir V.A.G 1274/8 on the reservoir.

-- Fill the coolant circuit. Use the Cooling System Filler Unit VAS 6096. Refer to Operating Instructions.

Without Coolant System Filler Unit VAS 6096

-- Slowly add coolant until it reaches the upper marking on the reservoir.

-- Close the reservoir.

-- Start engine and maintain an engine speed of approximately 2, 000 RPM for approximately three minutes.

-- Let the engine run at idle until the coolant fan switches on.

-- Check coolant level and fill if necessary. When engine is warm, coolant level must be at top marking and when the engine is cold, it must be in the middle of the hatched field.
