Fuel Tank, Removing And Installing, All Wheel Drive Vehicles: Removing
-- Observe safety precautions. Refer to SAFETY PRECAUTIONS .
-- Follow the guidelines for clean working conditions. Refer to PARKING/AUXILIARY HEATER AND FUEL SYSTEM CLEAN WORKING CONDITIONS .
-- Drain the fuel tank. Refer to FUEL TANK, DRAINING .
-- Move the front seats all the way forward.
-- Turn off the ignition.
-- Remove the rear bench seat. Refer to BENCH SEAT/SINGLE SEAT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Unclip the right locking flange cover -1- at the tabs in direction of -arrows- using the :3409 .
-- Unclip the grommet -1- downward out of the cover -2-.
-- Guide the cover -2- on the wiring harness -3- downward.
-- Unlock and disconnect the connector -2- from the locking flange.
Vehicles With Parking Heater (CANADA ONLY):
-- Release the connector -3- for the Metering Pump -V54- and remove it.
Continuation For All Vehicles
-- Unclip the cover -1- off the left locking flange using :3409 in direction of -arrows-.
-- Unclip the grommet -1- downward out of the cover -2-.
-- Guide the cover -2- on the wiring harness -3- downward.
-- Release and disconnect the connector -2- from the left sealing flange for the Fuel Level Sensor 2 -G169-.
-- Unclip the connectors -1 and 3- from the sealing flange.
-- Disconnect the connectors -1 and 3-.
-- Open the fuel filler door unit -2-.
-- Clean the area around the fuel filler tube.
-- Remove the cover -1- on the fuel filler neck.
Seal the fuel filler tube opening with a clean plug to prevent dirt from getting into the tube.
-- Remove the fuel filler door unit -2-. Refer to FUEL FILLER DOOR, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the right rear wheel. Refer to WHEELS AND TIRES .
-- Remove the right rear wheel housing liner. Refer to REAR WHEEL HOUSING LINER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove fuel filler tube bolts -1 and 2-.
-- Remove the rear section from the exhaust system. Refer to OVERVIEW - MUFFLER .
-- Remove the fuel line -1- from the underbody. Disconnect the connector couplings. Refer to CONNECTOR COUPLINGS, SEPARATING .
Fuel Lines Are Under Pressure.
Danger of personal injury to eyes and skin.
Wear protective eyewear and protective clothing in order to avoid injury and contact with the skin. Wrap a cloth around the connection before loosening hose connections. Open the connection carefully and release the pressure.
-- Disconnect the fuel return line -2-. Disconnect the connector couplings. Refer to CONNECTOR COUPLINGS, SEPARATING .
Vehicles With Parking Heater (CANADA ONLY):
-- Remove the fuel line -1- from the parking heater. Disconnect the connector couplings. Refer to CONNECTOR COUPLINGS, SEPARATING .
Continuation For All Vehicles:
-- Remove the driveshaft. Refer to DRIVESHAFT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Release and disconnect the connector -1- for the all wheel drive clutch.
-- Place the :VAS6931 under the fuel tank to support it as illustrated.
-- Remove the bolts -1 through 5-.
To improve clarity, the fuel tank is shown without the :VAS6931 .
A second technician is required to remove the fuel tank.
-- A second technician must support the rear edge of the fuel tank. by hand.
-- Lower the fuel tank using :VAS6931 .
-- By turning it accordingly, lower the fuel tank sideways.
-- Guide the filler neck out between the rear axle and the body.
-- A second mechanic is required to guide out the fuel filler tube by hand at the longitudinal member.
