-- Remove the noise insulation. Refer to Removal And Installation .

-- Remove the pendulum support bolts -1 and 2-.

-- Press the "engine and transmission" forward and secure the position with a suitable piece of wood -A-.

-- Support the front part of the exhaust system using the Engine/Gearbox Jack VAG1383A.

-- Disconnect the exhaust system at the clamping sleeve -arrows- and remove the rear exhaust system. Refer to Removal And Installation .

-- Remove the tunnel brace.

-- Loosen the intermediate bearing bolts -arrows- 2 turns.

-- Loosen but do not remove the front and rear driveshaft flexible disc bolts.

-- Counter hold the rear final drive to loosen and tighten the bolts.

So that noises due to imbalance do not occur later:

-- If no marks -arrows- are present, mark the position of the driveshaft flexible disc with respect to the input flange on the rear final drive.

-- Also mark the position of the driveshaft with respect to the output flange on the bevel box.

-- Remove the driveshaft flexible disc from the rear final drive and lower it onto the Engine/Gearbox Jack VAG1383A.

-- When removing and installing the driveshaft, be careful not to damage the seal -arrow-.

NOTE:

Two technicians are needed to remove the driveshaft.

-- Unbolt the driveshaft from the bevel box.

WARNING:

To prevent damaging the protective boot in the center bearing, remove and install the driveshaft in its fully extended position; likewise, store it in this position.

-- Unbolt the center bearing and if possible, remove it to the rear in its fully extended length.
