Draining And Filling
Special tools and workshop equipment required
- Refractometer T10007A
- Shop Crane - Drip Tray VAS6208
- Hose Clip Pliers VAS6362
- Cooling System Charge Kit VAS6096
- Cooling System Tester - Adapter VAG1274/8
Draining
Risk of scalding due to hot steam and hot coolant:
- When the engine is warm the coolant system is under pressure.
- Wear protective goggles and protective clothing to prevent damage to eyes and scalding.
- Reduce pressure by covering the coolant expansion tank cap with a cloth and carefully opening.
Drained coolant must be stored in a clean container for disposal or reuse.
Follow coolant disposal regulations.
-- Open the cap on the coolant expansion tank.
-- Remove the noise insulation. Refer to Description and Operation .
Collect any leaking fluid using the Shop Crane - Drip Tray VAS6208.
-- Place the Shop Crane - Drip Tray VAS6208 under the engine.
-- Pull the coolant hose retaining clip -arrow- downward and remove the coolant hose from the radiator quick-release coupling.
-- In addition, to draining the coolant from the engine, disconnect the coolant hose at the oil cooler -arrow-.
Filling
Only use distilled water for mixing with G12 Plus-Plus. Using distilled water provides optimum corrosion protection.
Only use coolant additive G 12 Plus-Plus, that conforms to TL VW 774 G.
Use only distilled water.
G12 Plus-Plus prevents frost and corrosion damage, scaling and also raises the boiling point. For this reason the system must be filled all year round with frost and corrosion protection additives.
Because of its high boiling point, the coolant improves engine reliability under heavy loads, particularly in areas with tropical climates.
Protection against frost must be assured to about -25 °C (-13 °F), for arctic climatic areas to approximately -35 °C (-31 °F).
The coolant concentration must not be reduced by adding distilled water even in warmer seasons and in warmer countries. The coolant additive portion must be at least 40%.
Increase the portion of G12 Plus-Plus if stronger freeze protection is needed.
Only up to a maximum concentration of 60% for freeze protection down to approximately -40 °C (-40 °F). Otherwise the freeze protection is lessened and the cooling effect will be diminished.
If the radiator, heater core, cylinder head or cylinder head gasket is replaced, do not reuse the old coolant.
The Refractometer T10007A is recommended for determining the freeze protection portion density.
Recommended Mixture Ratios
| Frost Protection to | Freeze Protection Portion | G12 Plus-Plus (1) | Distilled Water (1) | ||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|

| -35 °C (-31 °F) | 50% | 4.0 liters | 4.0 liters | ||
| -40 °C (-40 °F) | 60% | 4.8 liters | 3.2 liters | ||

-- Install the lower coolant hose and secure it with the retaining clip -arrow-.
-- Install the coolant hose to the oil cooler -arrow-.
-- Install the noise insulation. Refer to Description and Operation .
Using the Cooling System Charge Kit VAS6096
-- Install the Cooling System Tester - Adapter VAG1274/8 onto the coolant expansion tank.
-- Fill the coolant circuit using the Cooling System Charge Kit VAS6096. Refer to the operating instructions for the cooling system charge unit.
Without the Cooling System Charge Kit VAS6096
-- Slowly fill the coolant up to the upper mark in the hatched area on the expansion tank.
-- Install the coolant expansion tank cap.
-- Start the engine and maintain an engine speed of about 2000 rpm for approximately three minutes.
-- Let the engine run at idle until the coolant fan turns on.

- Reduce pressure by covering the coolant expansion tank cap with a cloth and carefully opening.
-- Check the coolant level and fill if necessary:
- When the engine is warm, the coolant level must be at the top mark and when the engine is cold, it must be in the middle of the hatched field.
