Coolant, Draining And Filling

Special tools and workshop equipment required

Draining

WARNING:

The coolant system is under pressure when the engine is warm.

Risk of scalding due to hot steam and hot coolant.

Reduce pressure by covering the coolant expansion tank cap with a cloth and opening carefully.

-- Open the coolant expansion tank cap.

-- Remove the noise insulation. Refer to one of the following:

GTI and Tiguan, refer to Description and Operation

Eos and Passat, refer to "Noise Insulation" in Removal and Installation .

CC, refer to "Noise Insulation" in Description and Operation

-- Reposition the charge air hose clamps -1 and 2-, remove the hose and plug the charge air cooler with a clean cloth.

-- Place the drip tray fro VAS 6100 VAS 6208 under the engine.

-- Remove the lower coolant hose -1- from the radiator and allow the coolant to drain.

Filling

CAUTION:

Do not mix distilled water with coolant additives. Using distilled water provides optimum corrosion protection.

NOTE:

The water portion of the coolant influences the effectiveness of the coolant. Volkswagen has decided to define the water quality used in the cooling system based on the different mixtures, countries and regional requirements. For this reason, we recommend using distilled water for older models when adding coolant or filling coolant for the first time.

Other coolant additives may above all reduce the corrosion protection effect significantly. The damage resulting from this may lead to loss of coolant and consequently to severe engine damage.

Coolant with the correct mixture ratio prevents freezing and corrosion damage and calcium deposits. The boiling point will be raised. The cooling system must be filled with coolant additive year round.

Because of its high boiling point, the coolant improves engine reliability under heavy loads, particularly in countries with tropical climates.

Freeze protection must be guaranteed down to approximately -25 °C (-13 °F) (in arctic climatic countries down to approximately -36 °C (-33 °F)).

The coolant concentration must not be reduced by adding water even in warmer seasons and in warmer countries. The coolant additive portion must be at least 40%.

If a lower freeze protection is necessary due to the climatic conditions, increase the amount of coolant additive. The maximum amount is 60%. If the amount is increased beyond that, the freeze protection will be reduced and the cooling effect will be reduced.

The refractometer T10007A MUST be used to determine the freeze protection density.

Read the freeze protection value on the scale for the coolant additive that has been added.

The temperature on the refractometer T10007A is the freezing point. At this temperature, ice crystals may begin to form in the coolant.

Do not reuse used coolant.

Only use water/coolant additive to lubricate the coolant hoses.

Recommended Mixture Ratios

Frost Protection to Anti-Freeze Coolant Additive (1) Distilled Water (1)
-25 °C (-13 °F) -36 °C (-33 °F) 40% 50% 3.2 liters 4.0 liters 4.8 liters 4.0 liters
(1) The amount of coolant may vary depending on vehicle equipment.

-- Connect the lower coolant hose -1- to the radiator.

-- Install the charge air pipe.

-- Connect the coolant hose -arrow- to the after-run coolant pump.

-- Install the noise insulation. Refer to one of the following:

Filling Using the Cooling System Charge Unit VAS 6096

-- Install the adapter V.A.G 1274/8 onto the expansion tank.

-- Fill the coolant circuit using the cooling system charge unit VAS 6096. Refer to the operating instructions for the cooling system charge unit VAS 6096.

Filling Without Using the Cooling System Charge Unit VAS 6096

-- Slowly fill the coolant up to the upper mark in the hatched area on the expansion tank.

-- Close the expansion tank cap.

-- Start the engine and maintain an engine speed of about 2000 RPMs for approximately 3 minutes.

-- Allow the engine to run until the coolant fan starts running.

WARNING:

The coolant system is under pressure when the engine is warm.

Risk of scalding due to hot steam and hot coolant.

Reduce pressure by covering the coolant expansion tank cap with a cloth and carefully opening.

-- Check the coolant level and add coolant if necessary. When the engine is at operating temperature, the coolant level must be at the top mark. When the engine is cold, the coolant level must be in the center of the hatched area.
