Oil Pan: Removing

CAUTION:

If large quantities of metal particles or abraded material are detected during engine repairs, it may be an indication for a damaged crankshaft or rod bearings. To prevent further damage, perform the following steps after the repair:

Carefully clean oil passages.

Replace oil cooler.

Replace oil filter insert.

-- Remove Engine Cover.

One Piece Engine Cover

Pull the one piece front engine cover -arrows A- upward with a quick jerk and then pull the lower mount -arrow B- forward.

Two Piece Engine Cover

On the two piece engine cover, first pull the outer cover upward with a quick jerk -arrows in the upper illustration-, then pull the inner engine cover upward with a quick jerk -arrows in lower illustration-.

-- Remove the air filter/turbocharger intake hose.

-- Carefully cut the cable tie -1-.

-- Open the wiring bracket -2- and disengage the wiring harness.

-- Disconnect the connector -2- on the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor -G70-.

-- Disconnect the ventilation hose -1- and disengage it from the bracket -arrow-.

-- Open the spring-type clip -3- using spring-type clip pliers VAS 5024A and disconnect the intake hose from the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor -G70-.

-- Disconnect the intake manifold -5- from the air guide.

-- Unfasten bolt -4- and remove air filter housing and mass air flow sensor.

-- Remove both bolts -arrows- from the upper charge air pipe -A-.

-- Remove noise insulation. Refer to Removal and Installation .

-- Remove the charge air pipe bolt -arrow- -A- from the oil pan.

-- Disconnect the connector, if equipped, from the oil level thermal sensor -G266-.

-- Drain engine oil.

NOTE:

Observe disposal regulations!

-- Remove the oil pan/transmission connecting bolts.

-- Loosen oil pan screws with 10 mm hex ball socket 3185. (Remove using 5 mm socket 3249 or T10058).

-- Remove the oil pan. Loosen oil pan with light blows of a rubber headed hammer if necessary.

-- Remove sealant residue from cylinder block with a flat scraper.

-- Remove remaining sealant at oil pan using a rotating brush, e.g. a drill with plastic brush attachment (wear protective glasses).

-- Clean sealing surfaces. They must be free of oil and grease.
