Slave Cylinder

Special tools and workshop equipment required 

• Torque Wrench (5-50 Nm) V.A.G 1331

Removing 

-- Determine whether a coded radio is installed. If so, obtain the anti-theft code.

-- Turn off the ignition and disconnect the battery ground cable. Refer to Removal and Installation .

-- Remove the complete air filter housing if it located above the clutch slave cylinder. Refer to one of the following:

Gas engines, refer to DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION .

-- Remove the shift cable lock retainer -arrow 1- from the shift lever -A-.

-- Remove the shift cable from the pin.

Metal Relay Lever 

-- Remove the selector cable lock retainer -2- from the relay lever -B-.

-- Remove the selector cable from the pin.

-- Remove the lock retainer -arrow 3- for the relay lever -B- and then remove the relay lever.

Plastic Relay Lever 

-- Remove the relay lever together with the cable retainer from the transmission. Refer to PLASTIC RELAY LEVER .

Continuation for All 

-- Remove the nut -arrow 4- and then remove the shift lever -A-.

-- Remove the cable bracket bolts -arrows- from the transmission.

-- Tie up the shift and selector cables.

-- Remove the bracket -B- from the transmission and pull it off the hose/line assembly -A-.

-- Remove the transmission support bolts -arrows A- and support.

-- Place a lint free cloth under the clutch slave cylinder.

-- Remove the clamp for the hose/line assembly from the clutch slave cylinder.

-- Pull the hose/line assembly from the slave cylinder and plug it.

-- Remove the clutch slave cylinder bolts -arrows B- and slave cylinder.

Installing 

Install in reverse order of removal.

-- Install the clutch slave cylinder and tighten the bolts -arrows B- to specifications.

-- Attach the hose/line assembly to the clutch slave cylinder.

-- Push the hose/line assembly clamp all the way in.

-- Pull on the hose/line assembly to make sure it is secure.

-- Install the transmission support and bolts -arrows A-.

-- Bleed the clutch system after installing the clutch slave cylinder. Refer to CLUTCH SYSTEM, BLEEDING .

Assemble the selector mechanism. Refer to SHIFT AND SELECTOR CABLES .

Adjust the shift mechanism. Refer to SHIFT MECHANISM, ADJUSTING .

-- If removed, install the air filter housing. Refer to one of the following:

Gas engines, refer to DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION .

-- Connect the ground cable to the battery. Refer to Removal and Installation .

Tightening Specifications 

Clutch slave cylinder to transmission, see - item  9-.

Transmission shift lever to shift shaft, see - item 18- SHIFT AND SELECTOR CABLES .

Cable bracket to transmission, see - item 6- SHIFT AND SELECTOR CABLES .

Transmission support to transmission bracket and transmission:

-- Replace the bolts.

-- Tighten all bolts hand tight.

-- Tighten the bolts to specification.
