Oil Pan
Special tools and workshop equipment required
- Torque wrench (5-50 Nm) VAG 1331
- Socket XZN 8 T40159
- Old oil collecting and extracting device VAG 1782
- Silicon sealant D 176 501 A1
- Hand drill with plastic brush attachment
- Flat scraper
- Protective eyewear
Removing
-- Remove the noise insulation. Refer to Description and Operation .
-- Disconnect the 3 pin electrical connector from the oil level thermal sensor. if present.
-- Remove the bracket for the Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump motor from the oil pan.
-- Drain the engine oil.
Always follow the regulations for disposing of old engine oil!
Vehicles with DSG® have an indentation -A- on the flywheel for installing the oil pan bolts. Turn the flywheel so that the bolt head is accessible.
-- Remove the oil pan bolts on the transmission side -arrows- using the T40159.
-- Remove the remaining oil pan bolts and then remove the oil pan.
-- Loosen the oil pan with light blows from a rubber headed hammer if necessary.
-- Remove the sealant residue from the cylinder block with a flat scraper.
-- Remove the sealant residue from the pan with a rotating brush, for example, a hand drill with a plastic brush attachment (wear eye protection).
-- Clean the sealing surfaces, they must be free of oil and grease.
Installing
Note the expiration date of the sealing compound.
The oil pan must be installed within 5 minutes after application of the silicone sealant.
-- Cut the tube nozzle at the front marking (nozzle diameter approximately 3 mm).
-- Apply the silicone sealing compound D 176 501 A1, as shown, to the clean oil pan sealing surface. The sealing compound bead must be:
- 2 to 3 mm thick.
- and run on the inside of the bolt holes -arrows-.
Sealant bead must not be thicker than specified. Otherwise, excess sealant could get into oil pan and clog the strainer in the intake side of the oil pump.
After installing the oil pan, allow the sealant to dry for approximately 30 minutes. Only after then may the engine oil be added.
-- Apply the sealant D 176 501 A1 to a clean sealing surface as indicated in the illustration.
-- Install the oil pan immediately and tighten all the oil pan bolts hand tight.
-- Hand tighten the oil pan/transmission bolts just enough so that the oil pan contacts the transmission.
With the transmission removed, the oil pan must seal flush with cylinder block.
-- Tighten the oil pan bolts to 12 Nm.
-- Tighten the oil pan/transmission bolts to 45 Nm.
The rest of the assembly is basically a reverse of the removal sequence.
