Test sequence

• Connect the Scan Tool VAG1551 ( VAG1552 ) and with ignition switched on select engine electronics control unit with the "Address word" 01. (Connecting Scan Tool and selecting engine electronics control unit → Scan Tool VAG1551 , connecting  .)

Indicated on display:

Rapid data transfer HELP Select function XX

• Press buttons 0 and 8 for the function "Read measured value block" and confirm entry with Q button.

Indicated on display:

Read measured value block Enter display group number XXX

• Press buttons 0 , 0 and 6 for "Display group number 6" and confirm entry with Q button.
• Observe display in display field 2.

Specification: 0 0 0

Read measured value block 6 → 0 km/h 0 0 0 000000 255

• Operate clutch pedal. The left-hand position must change to 1.

Specification: 1 0 0

Read measured value block 6 → 0 km/h 1 0 0 000000 255

If the specifications are not obtained:

• Press the → button.
• Press buttons 0 and 6 for the function "End output" and confirm entry with the Q button.
• Switch off ignition.
• Pull connector off clutch vacuum vent valve switch F36 Fitting locations overview, → Clutch Pedal Switch F36 , checking  .

• Measure resistance at switch terminals.

Specification

Clutch not depressed: max. 10 Ω

Clutch depressed: ∞ Ω

If the specifications are not obtained:

• Replace clutch vacuum vent valve switch F36.
• Check DTC memory and, if necessary, repair any malfunctions and then erase → Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory, checking and erasing  .
• Read-out the readiness code → Reading readiness code  . If the DTC memory has been erased, the readiness code must be generated again → Readiness code, setting  .

If the specifications are obtained:

• Remove wiper arms and plenum cover: → 92 WINDSHIELD WIPER & WASHER SYSTEM

• Connect test box VAG1598/31 to control unit wiring harness.

Vehicles through model year → 2001 

• Check wiring between test box and connector for open circuit according to wiring diagram.

Terminal 2+ socket 66

Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ω

• Check wiring to contact 1 using wiring diagram. → Electrical Wiring Diagrams, Troubleshooting and Component Locations

Vehicles from model year 2002 → 

• Check wiring between test box and connector for open circuit according to wiring diagram.

Terminal 3+ socket 66

Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ω

• Check wiring to contact 1 using wiring diagram. → Electrical Wiring Diagrams, Troubleshooting and Component Locations

Continued for all vehicles 

• Check wires for short to one another, to vehicle Ground and to battery positive (B+).

Specification: ∞Ω

If no fault is detected in the wiring:

• Replace Diesel Direct Fuel Injection (DFI) Engine Control Module (ECM) J248 → Diesel Direct Fuel Injection (DFI) Engine Control Module (ECM) J248 , replacing  .
