Selector Shaft Seal

Special tools and workshop equipment required

Sleeve VW 423
Pulling Hook T20143/1
Sealing Grease for Seal G 052 128 A1

-- Remove the air filter housing if it is located above the selector shaft. Refer to one of the following:

Gas engines, refer to ENGINE COVER/UPPER AIR FILTER HOUSING , or AIR FILTER HOUSING .

With a Metal Relay Lever:

-- Remove the clip -2- and the relay lever -3-.

NOTE:

If the relay lever cannot be removed due to the transmission mount bracket, remove the selector cable from the relay lever. Remove the slide shoe from the transmission shift lever.

With a Plastic Relay Lever:

-- Remove the relay lever with the cable retainer. Refer to PLASTIC RELAY LEVER .

Continuation for all Shift Mechanisms:

-- Remove the nut -4- and the transmission shift lever -1-.

-- Pry out the seal using the pulling Hook T20143/1.

-- Lightly coat the outer circumference of the new shaft seal with oil.

-- Fill the area between the sealing and dust lips -arrow- halfway with sealing grease for sealG 052 128 A1.

-- Install the seal using the sleeve VW 423.

Further installation in reverse order of removal.

-- Install the transmission shift lever to the gear shift shaft and tighten the nut to specification, see "Nut" in item: 1.

NOTE:

The transmission shift lever can be installed in only one position.

-- Adjust the shift mechanism. Refer to SHIFT MECHANISM, ADJUSTING .

-- Install the air filter housing, if it was removed earlier. Refer to one of the following:

Gas engines, refer to ENGINE COVER/UPPER AIR FILTER HOUSING , or AIR FILTER HOUSING .
