Battery - vehicles with diesel engine, removing and installing
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
- Torque wrench VAG 1331 (or equivalent 5 - 50 Nm)
- Spring clamp pliers VAS 5024A
Removing:
- Disconnect battery → Battery, disconnecting and connecting .
- Pull engine cover upward - arrows A - and forward - arrow B -.
- Disconnect electrical connection - 1 - and loosen spring clamp - 2 - with pliers VAS 5024A.
- Disconnect vacuum hose - arrow - from air filter housing.
- Remove screw for air filter housing - arrow -.
- Release retaining tabs - arrows - and remove cover.
- Disconnect and remove hose - arrow - from air filter housing.
- Pull air filter housing upward from brackets and remove.
- Lift battery box panel upwards - arrow -.
- Remove bolt - 1 - and hold-down bracket - 2 -.
- Fold handles together - arrows - and carefully lift battery from engine compartment.
Installing:
CAUTION:
Results of inadequately secured battery:
- Shorter battery service life due to vibration damage.
- Battery cell and plate damage.
- Electrolyte leakage due to battery case damage.
- Poor collision safety.
Install in reverse of removal, noting the following:
- Tighten all fasteners according to values in table → Battery, tightening torques .
- Check battery for proper seating after installation.
- Reconnect battery → Battery, disconnecting and connecting .

When disconnecting and reconnecting battery terminals, observe all applicable Notes and torque specifications, as well as instructions on performing OBD program and electrical system function checks as specified in →
