Coolant thermostat, removing and installing

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Drip tray V.A.G 1306
Torque wrench V.A.G 1331
Hose clip pliers V.A.G 1921
Anti-freeze protection tester

Removing

NOTE:

Always replace gaskets and seals.

Drain coolant. Refer to Cooling system, draining and filling .

Disconnect coolant hose from connecting piece - 2 -.
Remove bolts - 1 - from connecting piece - 2 - and remove connecting piece - 2 - with coolant thermostat - 4 -.
Turn coolant thermostat - 4 - ¹ / ₄ turn (90 ° ) left and remove it from the connection - 2 -.

Installing

Installation is in reverse order of removal. Note the following:

Moisten new O-ring - 3 - with coolant.
Insert coolant thermostat - 4 - into connection - 2 - and turn right ¹ / ₄ turn (90 ° ).

NOTE:

The clip on the thermostat must be positioned at approx. right angle.

Insert connection - 2 - with thermostat - 4 - into engine block.

Tighten mounting bolts - 1 -. Torque specification: 15 Nm
Fill engine with coolant. Refer to Cooling system, draining and filling .
