VAG 1551 Scan Tool (ST), selecting function: Notes
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 7 other vehicles, including the 1995 Volkswagen Jetta III, 1995 Volkswagen Golf III, 1995 Volkswagen Cabrio, 1994 Volkswagen Jetta III, and 1994 Volkswagen Golf III. - Battery Positive Voltage (B+) OK
- Fuse 22 (S22) OK
- Ground (GND) connections on engine/transmission OK. (location: below lower intake manifold)
- Connect VAG 1551 with adapter harness.
- 1993 m.y. See VAG 1551 Scan Tool (ST), connecting (1993 m.y.) .
- Starting 1994 m.y. See VAG 1551 SCAN TOOL (ST), CONNECTING (STARTING 1994 M.Y.) .
Depending on function desired:
- Switch ignition ON, or
- Start engine (except for function 03). See SELECTABLE FUNCTIONS .
NOTE:
- Additional operating instructions can be printed out by pressing the HELP button on the VAG 1551 Scan Tool (ST).
- The--> button advances the Scan Tool (ST) program sequence.
- Press button -1- for "Rapid data transfer" operating mode.
Indicated on display
- Press buttons -0- and -1- (01 enters the address word for the vehicle system to be tested, "Engine Electronics").
Indicated on display
- Press -Q- button to confirm input.
Motronic Engine Control Module identification will be displayed (example: 037 906 258 T, coding1).
NOTE:
- Correct Engine Control Module (ECM) number and coding are displayed only at closed throttle position (2000 RPM or less).
- ECM coding varies according to application.
- Checking/replacing ECM. See MULTIPORT FUEL INJECTION (MFI) .

If "Control module does not answer" appears in display, the possible causes of malfunction can be printed out by pressing HELP button.
After repairing the possible causes of the malfunction:
- Press buttons -0- and -1- to again enter address word 01 for "Engine Electronics".
- Press -Q- button to confirm input.
- Press the --> button.

NOTE:
To select function 02 "Check DTC Memory", switch the printer on with the PRINT button (indicator lamp on the button lights up). With printer on, the stored Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) are automatically displayed and printed out in sequence.
