WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 8 other vehicles, including the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta, 2002 Volkswagen GTI, 2001 Volkswagen Jetta, 2001 Volkswagen GTI, and 2000 Volkswagen Jetta. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Press → button.
Indicated on display
| Output Diagnostic Test Mode -> Secondary air pump relay J299 |
The Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay J299 activates the secondary air pump motor which runs at intervals, until output diagnostic test mode is terminated by pressing the → button.
If the Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump motor V101 does not run at intervals:
- Disconnect 2-pin harness connector from Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump motor V101 - arrow -.
- Connect Voltage tester VAG 1527B using adapter cables from VW 1594 to disconnected connector LED must flash.
If LED flashes:
- Proceed with output DTM until completed.
- Switch ignition off.
- Replace Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump motor V101. → 26 - EXHAUST SYSTEM, EMISSION CONTROLS
- Check DTC memory. If necessary, repair any malfunctions and erase DTC memory → Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory, checking and erasing (scan tool functions 02 and 05) .
- Display readiness code → Readiness code (function 15), displaying . If DTC memory has been erased, the readiness code must be generated again → Readiness code (function 15), generating .
If LED does not flash, but Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Relay J299 clicks:
- Proceed with output DTM until completed.
- Switch ignition off.
Fig 3: Checking Wire Between Secondary Air Injection Pump Motor V101 And Terminal 1 And Body Ground For Open Circuit
- Check wire between Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Pump Motor V101 and terminal - 1 - and body Ground (GND) for open circuit.
If no malfunction in wire is detected:
- Pull Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay J299 - arrow - off relay plate in control module protective housing.
NOTE:
- If tools are necessary to pull relays or control modules out of the relay plate, first disconnect battery Ground (GND) strap.
- Before disconnecting battery Ground (GND) strap obtain code for radios with anti-theft coding.
- Using wiring diagram, check wire between Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump motor V101 terminal - 2 - and terminal - 2 - on relay plate for open circuit. Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ω
If no malfunction in wire is detected:
- Using wiring diagram, check voltage supply contact 1 (terminal 30) for Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay J299.
If voltage supply is OK:
- Replace Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay J299.
If LED does not flash and Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay J299 does not click:
- Proceed with output DTM until completed.
- Switch ignition off.
- Disconnect Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay J299 - arrow - from relay plate in control module protective housing.
NOTE:
- If tools are necessary to pull relays or control modules out of the relay plate, first disconnect battery Ground (GND) strap.
- Before disconnecting battery Ground (GND) strap obtain code for radios with anti-theft coding.
- Introduce output DTM again and activate Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay J299.
- Using adapter cables from VW 1594 connect voltage tester VAG 1527B to terminals 3 and 4 on relay plate. LED must flash.
If LED flashes:
- Proceed with output DTM until completed.
- Switch ignition off.
- Replace Secondary Air Injection (AIR) pump relay J299.
If LED does not flash:
- Proceed with output DTM until completed.
- Switch ignition off.
- Using adapter cables from VW 1594 connect voltage tester VAG 1527B to terminal 1 of relay plate and body Ground (GND). LED must light-up.
If LED does not light-up:
- Using wiring diagram, check wire between terminal 1 of relay plate and Fuel Pump (FP) relay J17 for open circuit. Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ω
If LED lights up:
- Remove wiper arms and plenum chamber cover. → 92 WINDSHIELD WIPER & WASHER SYSTEM
- Connect Test box VAG 1598/31 to control module wiring harness. The engine control module is not connected by this action.
- Check wire between test box socket 46 and terminal - 4 - on relay plate for open circuit using wiring diagram. Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ω
If no wiring malfunction is detected:
- Replace Motronic ECM J220 → Engine Control Module (ECM), replacing .
