Work sequence

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 6 other vehicles, including the 2001 Volkswagen Jetta, 2001 Volkswagen Golf, 2000 Volkswagen Jetta, 2000 Volkswagen Golf, and 1999 Volkswagen Jetta. Separate gray 3-pin connector - arrow - to engine speed sensor.

Measure resistance between connector terminals 1 + 2.

Specification: 1.0 to 1.5 kΩ

If specification is not obtained:

Replace engine speed sensor G28.
Check DTC memory and, if necessary, repair any malfunctions and then erase DTC memory → Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory, checking and erasing .
Read readiness code → Readiness code, displaying .

If DTC memory has been erased, the readiness code must be generated again → Readiness code, setting .

If specification is obtained:

Remove wiper arms and plenum cover: → 92 WINDSHIELD WIPER & WASHER SYSTEM

Connect test box V.A.G 1598/22 (through my 1999) or test box V.A.G 1598/31 (from my 2000) to control module wiring harness.

Check wiring between test box and 3 pin connector for open circuit according to wiring diagram.

Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ω

Check wires at 3 pin connector for short circuit to one another according to wiring diagram.

Specification: ∞ Ω

If no wiring malfunction is detected:

Remove sensor and check sensor wheel for secure fit, damage and run-out.

If no malfunction is detected:

Replace engine control module → Diesel Direct Fuel Injection (DFI) Engine Control Module (ECM) J248 , replacing .
