Oil Pump, Pan And Balance Shaft Module Overview
If metal shavings or a large quantity of small metal particles are found when repairing an engine, this could indicate that the crankshaft or connecting rod bearings are damaged. To prevent further damage, perform the following steps after the repair:
- Thoroughly clean the oil passages
- Replace the oil spray jets
- Replace the oil cooler
- Replace the oil filter element
- Oil Pan
- Removing and installing, refer to OIL PAN .
- Bolt
- 10 Nm
- Intake Tube
- Clean the strainer if contaminated.
- Bolt
- 10 Nm
- O-ring
- Always replace.
- Oil Pump
- Removing and installing, refer to OIL PUMP .
- Before installing, check if both alignment sleeves for centering the oil pump on the balance shaft module are present.
- Oil Pump Driveshaft
- Circlip
- Must lie in the base of the groove.
- Replace damaged or stretched circlips.
- Balance Shaft Spur Gear
- Bolt
- 20 Nm + an additional 90° (1/4) turn.
- Always replace.
- Hub
- For the intermediate sprocket.
- Always replace.
- Bolt
- 90 Nm + an additional 90° (1/4) turn.
- Always replace.
- Axial Bearing Disc
- For the intermediate sprocket.
- Always replace.
- Note the installed position, refer to Fig 3.
- Intermediate Sprocket
- Always replace.
- To achieve the correct backlash, a coating is applied to the intermediate sprocket. The correct backlash is achieved as the coating wears away.
- With intermediate sprockets that only have a coating on parts of the circumference, a white dot is applied to ensure the correct installed position.
- If there is no white dot, the entire circumference of the intermediate sprocket is coated.CAUTION:
When installing the intermediate sprocket, make sure the axial bearing disc is seated correctly. Refer to Fig 3.
- Installed position: the part number must be visible.
- Removing and installing, refer to BALANCE SHAFT MODULE .
- Axial Bearing Disc
- For the intermediate sprocket.
- Always replace.
- Note the installed position, refer to Fig 3.
- If necessary, secure to the housing with grease to install the intermediate sprocket.
- Crankshaft Spur Gear
- Removing and installing, refer to BALANCE SHAFT SPUR GEAR .
- Balance Shaft Module
- Removing and installing, refer to BALANCE SHAFT MODULE .
- Before installing, check if both alignment sleeves for centering the balance shaft module on the cylinder block are present.
- Bolt
- M7 Bolt
13 Nm + an additional 90° (1/4) turn.
- M8 Bolt
20 Nm + an additional 90° (1/4) turn.
- Always replace.
- Observe the tightening sequence, refer to BALANCE SHAFT MODULE .
- M7 Bolt
- Oil Suction Pipe
- Bolt
- 10 Nm
- Bolt
- 40 Nm
- Bolt
- 45 Nm
- Bolt
- 15 Nm
- Tighten in a diagonal sequence and in steps.
- Seal
- Always replace.
- Oil Drain Plug
- 30 Nm
- Bolt with pressure relief valve, 27 Nm (insert without sealant)
- Oil spray jet (for piston cooling)
When replacing the oil spray jet, pay attention to the correct allocation for the pistons.
See the "CAUTION" at the top. Refer to OIL PUMP, PAN AND BALANCE SHAFT MODULE OVERVIEW .
When installing the intermediate sprocket, make sure the axial bearing disc -A- does not slip out of the indentations on the balance shaft housing -arrows- and become stuck. Secure it on the balance shaft with grease if necessary.
