Oil Pan

Special tools and workshop equipment required 

• T Bar and Socket 10 mm 3185
• Hex Ball Socket T10058
• Torque Wrench (5-50 Nm) V.A.G 1331
• Used Oil Collecting and Extracting Device V.A.G 1782
• Hand Drill with Plastic Brush Attachment
• Protective Eyewear
• Flat Scraper
• Silicone Sealant D 176 404 A2

Removing

-- Remove the noise insulation. Refer to Description and Operation .

-- Drain the engine oil.

-- Install the insulation on the oil pan.

-- Remove the bolts connecting the oil pan to the transmission.

-- Remove the oil pan.

-- Loosen the oil pan with light blows from a rubber mallet, if necessary.

-- Remove any sealant residue from the cylinder block with a flat scraper.

-- Remove the sealant residue from the oil pan using a rotating brush such as a drill with a plastic brush attachment.

-- Clean the sealing surfaces. They must be free of oil and grease.

Installing

-- Cut the sealant tube nozzle at the front mark (nozzle diameter: approximately 3 mm).

-- Apply the silicone sealant, as shown, to the clean oil pan sealing surface. The sealant bead must be:

• 2 to 3 mm thick
• run around inside of bolt holes -arrows-

-- Apply the silicone sealant to the clean oil pan sealing surfaces as illustrated. (The illustration shows the location of the sealant bead on the cylinder block.)

-- Position the oil pan immediately and tighten the bolts connecting the oil pan to the transmission and all of the oil pan to cylinder block bolts. Make sure the oil pan aligns flush with the intermediate plate/transmission flange.

-- Tighten the oil pan bolts in a diagonal sequence.

• Tightening specification, see -item 23- in the OIL PUMP, PAN AND BALANCE SHAFT MODULE OVERVIEW .

-- Tighten the oil pan to cylinder block bolts.

• Tightening specification, see -item 21- in the OIL PUMP, PAN AND BALANCE SHAFT MODULE OVERVIEW .

-- Tighten the oil pan to transmission bolts.

• Tightening specification, see -item 22- in the OIL PUMP, PAN AND BALANCE SHAFT MODULE OVERVIEW .

Further installation is performed in reverse order.

Removing

-- Remove the noise insulation. Refer to Description and Operation .

-- Place the used oil collecting and extracting device V.A.G 1782 under the engine and drain the engine oil.

-- Loosen the clamp -2-, lift the circlip -1- and remove the charge air cold side hose.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows- on the charge air pipe and move it to the side.

-- Remove the bolt -arrow- and move the engine coolant circulation pump 2 -V178- to the side.

-- Remove the bolt -arrow- on the charge air pipe on the hot side.

-- Disconnect the connector from the oil level thermal sensor -G266-.

-- Remove the bolts connecting the oil pan to transmission.

-- Remove the oil pan to cylinder block bolts in a diagonal sequence.

-- Loosen the oil pan with light blows from a rubber mallet, as necessary.

-- Remove the sealant residue from the crankshaft housing with a flat blade scraper.

-- Remove any sealant residue from the pan with a rotating brush, for example, using a hand drill with a plastic brush attachment (wear eye protection).

-- Clean the sealing surfaces. They must be free of oil and grease.

Installing

-- Apply silicone sealant to the clean sealing surfaces of the oil pan as shown. The silicone sealant bead must be:

• 2 to 3 mm thick
• and run on inside of bolt holes -arrows-

-- Apply the silicone sealant bead as illustrated to the clean sealing surface of the oil pan. (The illustration shows the location of the sealant bead on the crankshaft housing.)

-- Position the oil pan immediately and tighten the bolts connecting the oil pan to transmission and all of the oil pan to cylinder block bolts. Make sure the oil pan aligns flush with the intermediate plate/transmission flange.

-- Tighten the oil pan to cylinder block bolts in a diagonal sequence to 15 Nm.

-- Tighten the oil pan to transmission bolts to 40 Nm.

The rest of the installation is basically a reverse of the removal sequence.
