Balance Shaft Timing Chain Overview

- 9 Nm
- Balance Shaft
- Replace after removing.
- Exhaust side
- Lubricate the bearing with engine oil.
- Removing and installing, refer to EXHAUST CAMSHAFT BALANCE SHAFT .
- Balance Shaft Pipe
- Note the installed position, refer to Fig 2.
- Chain Tensioner
- 65 Nm
- Install using locking fluid.
- Cylinder Block
- Balance Shaft
- Replace after removing.
- Intake side.
- Lubricate the bearing with engine oil.
- Removing and installing, refer to INTAKE CAMSHAFT BALANCE SHAFT .
- O-ring
- Always replace.
- Lubricate with engine oil.
- Bearing Pin
- Lubricate with engine oil.
- Note the installed position, refer to Fig 3.
- Intermediate Shaft Sprocket
- For the balance shaft.
- The intermediate shaft sprocket must be replaced if the bolt is loosened.

- Washer
- Bolt
- Always replace.
- The intermediate shaft sprocket must be replaced if the bolt is loosened.
- Tightening sequence and specification, refer to Fig 4.
- Guide Rail
- For the timing chain.
- Guide Pin
- 20 Nm
- Tensioning Rail
- For the balance shaft timing chain.
- Guide Pin
- 20 Nm

- Removing and installing, refer to BALANCE SHAFT TIMING CHAIN .
- Crankshaft Sprocket
- Note the installed position, refer to Figure.
- Guide Rail
- For the balance shaft timing chain.
- Guide Pin
- 20 Nm
- The pin on the balance shaft pipe must fit into the groove -arrow-
-- Replace and lubricate the O-ring -1-.
- The alignment pin -arrow- on the bearing pin must engage in the hole in the cylinder block.
-- Lubricate the bearing pin
Special Tools And Workshop Equipment Required
- Torque Wrench (5-50 Nm) V.A.G 1331
Procedure
CAUTION:
Always replace the intermediate shaft sprocket. Otherwise the backlash will not adjust itself and it could result in engine damage. The new intermediate shaft sprocket has an anti-friction coating that wears off after a short period of use, which automatically adjusts the backlash.
-- Tighten in the bolt in 4 steps as described below:
-- Tighten the bolt to 10 Nm.
-- Turn the sprocket.
- The sprocket cannot have any play. If it does, loosen it and retighten it.
-- Tighten the bolt to 30 Nm.
-- Continue tightening the bolt an additional 90° (1/4) turn.
