WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2010 Volkswagen Jetta, 2009 Volkswagen Jetta, 2009 Volkswagen GLI, 2008 Volkswagen Jetta, and 2008 Volkswagen GLI. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
Secure the engine to the assembly stand using the engine and transmission holder VAS 6095 whenever performing any repairs. Refer to ENGINE, SECURING TO THE Engine and Transmission Holder VAS 6095 .
- Cylinder Block
- Checking the cylinder bore. Refer to Figure.
- If the cylinder block is being replaced, then the bearing shells must be allocated. Refer to CRANKSHAFT BEARING SHELL ALLOCATION .
- For the correct piston and cylinder dimensions, refer to PISTON AND CYLINDER DIMENSIONS .
- Bearing Shell, for the Cylinder Block
- With a lubricating groove.
- Do not interchange used bearing shells (mark them).
- Allocation, refer to CRANKSHAFT BEARING SHELL ALLOCATION .
- Crankshaft
- After removal, lay aside so that the sensor wheel (List Item: 8) is not rested on and becomes damaged.
- If the crankshaft is being replaced, then the bearing shells must be allocated to the bearing cap. Refer to CRANKSHAFT BEARING SHELL ALLOCATION .
- Crankshaft bearing cap tightening sequence. Refer to Fig 2.
- Crankshaft needle bearing, replacing (vehicles with a Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG). Refer to CRANKSHAFT NEEDLE BEARINGS .
- Checking the axial play. Refer to CRANKSHAFT AXIAL PLAY, CHECKING .
- Checking the radial play. Refer to CRANKSHAFT RADIAL PLAY, CHECKING .
- Do not rotate the crankshaft when measuring the radial play.
- Crankshaft dimensions, refer to CRANKSHAFT DIMENSIONS .
- Bearing Shell, for the Bearing Cap
- Without a lubricating groove
- Do not interchange used bearing shells (mark them).
- Allocation, refer to CRANKSHAFT BEARING SHELL ALLOCATION .
- Bolt
- Always replace.
- For the tightening sequence and specification; refer to Fig 2.
- Bearing Cap
- Bearing cap 1: Belt pulley side.
- Retaining tabs on the bearing shells and cylinder block/bearing caps must lie above one another.
- Screw
- 10 Nm + 90° (1/4) additional turn.
- Always replace.
- Replace the sensor wheel every time the screws are loosened. Refer to CRANKSHAFT SENSOR WHEEL, REPLACING .
- Sensor Wheel
- For the engine speed sensor -G28-.
- Only possible to install in one position, the bores are offset.
- Replace the sensor wheel every time screws are loosened. Refer to CRANKSHAFT SENSOR WHEEL, REPLACING .
- Thrust Washers
- For bearing cap 3.
- Bolt
- Always replace.
- Tightening sequence, refer to Fig 2.
-- Tighten the crankshaft bearing cap bolts in sequence -1 through 10- :
- Tighten the bolts -1 through 10- and the -arrows- by hand.
- Tighten the bolts -1 through 10- to 65 Nm.
- Tighten the bolts -1 through 10- an additional 90° (1/4) turn using a ratchet.
- Tighten the bolts -arrows- to 20 Nm.
- Tighten the bolts -arrows- and additional 90° (1/4) turn using a ratchet.
