Initiating Output Diagnostic Test Mode

NOTE: If engine is started or vehicle is moved, output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) of the instrument cluster cannot be initiated and will be terminated if in progress.
NOTE: Test sequence can be ended at any time by pressing the "C" button.
  1. Connect VAG 1551 scan tool. See Figure .
  2. Switch ignition on.
  3. Select operating mode 1 "Rapid data transfer."
  4. Enter address word 17 for "instrument cluster."
  5. After control module identification is displayed, press forward (right) arrow button. Indicated on display:
    • Rapid data transfer HELP
    • Select function XX
  6. Press buttons "0" and "3", "output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM)." Indicated on display:
    • Rapid data transfer Q
    • 03 - Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM)
  7. Press "Q" button to confirm input. There are no indications in any displays and all control lamps to be tested switch off. Indicated on display:
    • Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM)
    • Analog indicators
  8. The following tests are performed after "Q" button is pressed:
    • Coolant temperature needle sweeps through entire display range
    • Tachometer needle sweeps through entire display range
    • Speedometer needle sweeps through entire display range
    • Fuel level needle sweeps through entire display range.
  9. After sweep of display ranges, the following fixed values are displayed:
    • Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) gauge: 90°C
    • Tachometer: 3000 1/min
    • Speedometer: 62 MPH (100 km/h)
    • Fuel gauge: 1/2.
  10. Press forward (right) arrow button. Indicated on display:
    • Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM)
    • Control lamp test instrument cluster
  11. The control lamps for components are activated and remain constantly lit:
    • Brake system (low brake fluid, ABS not functioning)
    • Coolant temperature/low coolant level indicator
    • Brake pad wear (if activated via coding)
    • Fuel reserve
    • Oil pressure
  12. Press forward (right) arrow button. Indicated on display:
    • Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM)
    • Seat belt warning light -K19-
  13. Seat belt warning light (K19) lights up (if activated via coding).
  14. Press forward (right) arrow button. Indicated on display:
    • Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM)
    • Chime
  15. Buzzer/chime is activated: a warning tone sounds in intervals.
  16. Press right arrow button. Indicated on display:
    • Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM)
    • Segment test
  17. All segments of LCD display in speedometer and tachometer are activated and become visible.
  18. Press forward (right) arrow button. Indicated on display:
    • Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM)
    • Coolant-overheating-test
  19. The safety shut-off (A/C compressor shut-off) is activated approximately 5 seconds later (only for vehicles with A/C system). No indication in instrument cluster!
  20. Press forward arrow button. Indicated on display:
    • Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM)
    • DONE
  21. Press right arrow button. All actual values are displayed again. Indicated on display:
    • Rapid data transfer HELP
    • Select function XX
  22. Press buttons -0- and -6-. to select function 06 "End Output". Indicated on display:
    • Rapid data transfer Q
    • 06 - End Output
  23. Press buttons "Q" button to confirm input. Indicated on display:
    • Rapid data transfer HELP
    • Enter address word XX
  24. The tester returns to the "Select function" screen.
