Coolant pump, removing and installing

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Engine support bridge 10 - 222 A with bracket for engine 10 - 222 A /1
Refractometer T10007
Drip tray V.A.G 1306
Torque wrench V.A.G 1331

Torque wrench V.A.G 1332
Water pump wrench V.A.G 1590

Removing

Remove engine cover.
Remove sound insulation pan, along with left and right sides: Refer to 50 BODY, FRONT
Remove ribbed belt, refer to Ribbed belt, removing and installing under Ribbed belt, removing and installing .
Pull off crankcase breather connecting hose between cylinder head cover and intake hose on cylinder head cover.

NOTE:

Press buttons on hose couplings to do this.

Drain coolant, refer to Cooling system, draining and filling under Cooling system, draining and filling .

Install engine support bridge 10 - 222 A with bracket for engine 10 - 222 A /1.
Insert securing hook of engine support bridge 10 - 222 A in right lifting eye of cylinder block and put engine under slight tension.

Unbolt engine side of assembly mounting from engine bracket at top - arrows -.

NOTE:

Use step ladder VAS 5085 to remove bolts.

Lower engine on support bridge only as far as necessary to remove coolant pump.

Remove belt pulley. Hold belt pulley with water pump wrench V.A.G 1590 when doing this.

NOTE:

If engine has been removed, it is not necessary to remove belt pulley. The coolant pump securing bolts can be unscrewed through the holes in the belt pulley.

Unscrew coolant pump securing bolts - 1 - and remove coolant pump - 2 -.

Installing

Installation is performed in reverse order of removal. Note the following:

Moisten new O-ring with coolant.
Insert coolant pump into cylinder block and tighten securing bolts. Torque specification: 8 Nm
Install belt pulley and tighten securing bolts. Torque specification: 20 Nm
Align engine subframe, refer to Engine and transmission mounts, aligning under Engine and transmission mounts, aligning .

NOTE:

Torque settings for assembly mountings, refer to Assembly mounting .

Install ribbed belt, refer to Ribbed belt, removing and installing under Ribbed belt, removing and installing .

Fill with new coolant, refer to Cooling system, draining and filling under Cooling system, draining and filling .
