Work sequence
WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
- Connect Scan Tool (ST) VAG 1551 (or Scan Tool (ST) VAG 1552 ) with adapter cable VAG 1551/3.
- After scan tool is connected, switch ignition on or start engine (depending upon desired function) table.
NOTE:
- If the display remains blank, check Scan Tool (ST) VAG 1551 voltage supply → Electrical Wiring Diagrams, Troubleshooting Component Locations
- If the display does not display what is described in the test procedure → scan tool operating instructions.
- If due to an input malfunction "Error in communication link" is displayed, disconnect Data Link Connector (DLC) from scan tool, reconnect DLC and repeat procedure.
- Operate scan tool taking into account information on display.

* Operating modes 1 and 2 are displayed alternately
- Operate scan tool taking into account information on display.
- Press button - 1 - to select "Rapid data transfer" operating mode 1.
- Press buttons - 0 - and - 1 - to insert "Engine Electronics" address word 01 and press - Q - button to confirm input.
The control module identification and coding are indicated on the display, e.g.:

- 021906018B = Part No. of the control module (for latest control module version → parts catalog)
- 018B: manual transmission, 018A: automatic transmission
- MOTRONIC ME7.1 = System designation (Motronic)
- V06 = Program level number
- Coding xxxxx = Control module coding, coding variants of Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) J220.
- WSC xxxxx = Dealership code from Scan Tool (ST) VAG 1551 , of the dealership which performed the last coding. (If the factory coding has not been changed, WSC 00000 appears)
NOTE:
- Replace the control module if the control version displayed does not correspond to the vehicle → Engine Control Module (ECM), replacing .
- An incorrectly coded Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) J220 leads to:
- Engine running malfunctions (gear change jerks, load change jerks, etc.)
- Increased fuel consumption
- Increased exhaust gas emissions
- Malfunctions stored in DTC memory which are not actually present
- Functions will not be performed ( Oxygen Sensor O2S control, activation of the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) system, etc.)
- Reduced transmission life
If coding differs from the vehicle version, check control module coding → Engine Control Module (ECM), coding .
