Work sequence
WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
- Connect VAG1551 scan tool with VAG1551/3B cable.
After the scan tool has been connected:
- Depending upon desired function: Switch ignition on or start engine Selectable functions (modes) under address word 33, CARB / OBD II .
NOTE:
- If the display remains blank, check voltage supply for diagnostic connection: → Electrical Wiring Diagrams, Troubleshooting and Component Locations
- If the display does not indicate as described in the work sequence: Scan tool operating instructions
- If due to an input malfunction "Error in data transfer!" is displayed, pull wire off scan tool, reconnect and repeat work step.
- Operate scan tool taking into account the information on the display:

- Operate scan tool taking into account the information on the display:
- Press key 1 for "Rapid data transfer".
- Press keys 0 and 1 for address word "Engine electronics" and confirm entry with Q key.
Control module identification and coding are indicated on display, e.g.:

- 06A 906 032 DL = Part No. of the control module (for latest control module version see parts catalog)
032 DL = manual transmission
032 GH / HF = automatic transmission
- 1.8 ltr. = Engine displacement
- R4/5VT = Engine configuration (4-Cyl. in-line engine, 5 valve, Turbo)
- G = CCS available
- 0001 = Program level number
- Coding xxxxx = Control module coding, coding variants of engine control module → Engine control module, coding .
- WSC xxxxx = Dealership code from VAG1551, of the workshop who carried out the last coding, (If the factory coding has not been changed, WSC 00000 appears)
NOTE:
- Replace control module if the control version displayed does not correspond to the vehicle → Engine control module, replacing .
- An incorrectly coded engine control module leads to:
- Engine running malfunctions (gear change jerks, load change jerks, etc.)
- Increased fuel consumption
- Increased exhaust gas emissions
- Malfunctions stored in DTC memory which are not actually present
- Functions will not be performed (oxygen sensor control, activation of the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) system, etc.).
- Reduced transmission life
If the coding differs from the vehicle version, then:
- Checking control module coding → Engine control module, coding , coding engine control module
- Press → key.
