NOTE:
- In order to achieve the quietest possible running, the entire drive shaft was balanced during manufacture. It is not possible to balance the entire drive shaft or the individual drive shaft tubes with workshop equipment. Therefore, the entire drive shaft must always be replaced when the front or rear drive shaft tubes are damaged.
- Do not bend the driveshaft, only store and move it fully extended.
- Mark positions of all parts to each other before removing. Reinstall in identical position, otherwise imbalance will be too high which could result in damage to the bearing or in vibration noises.
1 - Manual transmission with bevel gear transfer case
2 - Collar bolt with 12-point nut, 60 Nm
3 - Flexible disc with heat shield
- Removing and installing → Front flexible disc, removing and installing
- Installed position
4 - Collar bolt with 12-point nut, 60 Nm
5 - Front drive shaft tube
- Do not damage centering sleeve and seal in center of flange when removing and installing
6 - Cylinder bolt, 40 Nm
7 - Backing plate
8 - Clamp
- Tensioning: Tightening clamp
9 - Constant velocity (CV) joint boot
- Drive off with drift before pressing off constant velocity (CV) joint
- Check for damage
10 - Dished washer
- With splines on interior diameter
- Installed position: Larger diameter makes contact on CV joint
11 - Gasket
- Replace
- Pull off protective foil and bond in joint.
12 - Constant velocity joint
- Pressing off: Pressing off constant velocity (CV) joint
- Pressing on: Pressing on CV joint
- Grease specification: Press 25 g grease G6.3 on each side (total 50 g) into joint. When replacing CV boot add more grease to joint, if necessary.
13 - Circlip
- Replace
- Removing and installing snap ring pliers VW 161A
14 - Hex bolt, 45 Nm
15 - Washer
- Always replace
16 - Flange
- Pulling off: Pulling off flange
- Pulling on: Pulling on flange
17 - Intermediate bearing
- Pulling off: Pulling off intermediate bearing
- Installed position: Installed position of intermediate bearing
- Driving on: Driving on intermediate bearing
18 - Bolt, 25 Nm
19 - Rear drive shaft tube
- Do not damage centering sleeve and seal in center of flange when removing and installing
20 - Collar bolt with 12-point nut, 60 Nm
- Modification: As of 06.99, new securing bolts with inner 12-point heads used.
- Two of new securing bolts can be installed with a balancing washer in place of a mounting washer.
21 - Flexible disc with vibration dampener
- Removing and installing → Flexible disc, removing and installing
- Installed position
22 - Collar bolt with 12-point nut, 60 Nm
23 - Rear final drive
