Checking friction torque

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 7 other vehicles, including the 1995 Volkswagen Jetta III, 1995 Volkswagen Golf III, 1995 Volkswagen Cabrio, 1994 Volkswagen Jetta III, and 1994 Volkswagen Golf III. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

A - Torque gauge, commercially available 0-600 Ncm (0-50 in lb)

B - Socket (41 mm AF)

Friction Torque Example:

Application Friction torque
Drive pinion (measurement) 300 Ncm(1)
Differential (average) 70 Ncm
Friction torque of differential
+ drive pinion
370 Ncm
(1) In the case of used bearings, substitute the friction measured for the drive pinion.
